Morning all,

I know this has been covered many times but I just wanted a bit of advise. My 10 plate seems to have the earlier years third gear problem but was wondering if it could be anything else. It drives fine and has recently had a full service including gearbox oil etc only sometimes it feels like there is 2 points in the 2nd to 3rd gear change and it doesn't go in unless i hold the clutch right down and wait a few seconds. It sometimes has a notchy sound when going into the gear as well.

It seems to go in completely smoothly sometimes so a bit confused as I thought if it was the synchro it would do it everytime. Anyway is there anything else I should check and if not has anyone got a rough idea how much it is likely to cost to repair

Kind of hoping it is the clutch rather than the synchro, Is there a way I can test this. If it is the clutch would it not effect all gear changes though ?

Is the problem more pronounced when the car's cold? My 60 plate car is notchy 2nd to 3rd when cold but is fine when warmed up. It's far worse now I have a limited slip diff too. :crying:

Not really noticed but it is more noticeable first thing in the morning so I think so. Mine also has the Honda LSD

Mines like this, changed the clutch but didnt help. More of a synchro problem I think. Could try adjusting the clutch pedal to see first though.

Will try different oil to see if that helps. Strange thing is, is that it didn't do it at all yesterday and was smooth every change. :laugh2:

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Mine's had a slightly awkward third for a couple of years now first thing in the morning. The joys of owning an FN!

Yea, will try the oil change. It's not that bad, just happens now and then, It's never popped out or caused a massive crunch or anything, just a slight second delay in gear change now and then as I kind of know when its going to do it.

Just wanted to give a quick update, Fitted a shortshifter with the metal bushes from japspeed and it seems spot on now. No Notchy changes, No crunches all smooth and the gear change is so much better as well. Well worth the mod

I ordered some Amsoil as advised. Should I still put this in, The changes are alot better with the short shifter but still not 100%. Just wondering as I've seen comments about others saying not to use Amsoil, (this being a 5 year old topic though). Forgot to mention that my clutch pedal squeaks alot now as well (nearly 90% of the time) Could this also lead to harder gear changes

If you've got any concerns over an oil, speak to Opie. They're really good. I've always used Amsoil and wouldn't go with anything else. Squeaky pedal *could* be the master cylinder.

Oil's been changed and has made a world of a difference, No notch and very smooth change. Had a full service couple of months ago and the gearbox oil was changed then (Honda MTF) The oil that came out of it this weekend was quite dirty for recently changed oil and very watery

Something I have noticed over the years is that nearly every car I have driven feels notchy changing up from 2nd to 3rd.
I would only get worried if it makes a noise or feels as if something is actually grinding as you change.
My driving lifetime covers Ford, Vauxhall, Nissans, Mazdas, BMWs & 2 FN2s - so I put mine down to changing up too fast most of the time.

Mine was the same, new clutch, clutch bleed (with braided line but that won't have done anything), weighted gearknob (unbelievably big improvement!!) and short shift and its fine. Bit notchy when cold but fine when up to temps.

Its still more notchy than my Ep but think that's just a characteristic of the FN from asking other owners.

Slightly off topic tho - but do you notice with the LSD that your car tends to pull a tiny bit to the left? And the steering is occasionally a tiny bit off centre? Was the same in my R26 which also had LSD so just wondering if it's a feature of LSD equipped cars.

Might be more the fact that our roads are far from flat and tend to arch towards the outside. On the motorway and dual carriageways it's straight and true but on small roads it can pull left, definitely the camber of the wheels exagerrating it as it's more pronounced when my camber was increased.

Which gear knob did you opt for?

Bought a skunk2 440g and a blox 450g. Prefer the blox in the fn so put the skunk in my ep.
