Hi guys,

Not posted for a while but have been looking in.

Just thought I would give an update regarding the driving school Civic that one of our instructors bought end of March last year.

The car still drives superbly, has had very little money required beyond normal services and tyre wear etc. .... oh, it still has the original clutch fitted too.

Could this possibly be the highest miles on a New civic in that timescale and he has averaged 53 mpg, which for our job is excellent.

Any ideas what the second hand value of this car would be?

Possibly.
But if I were a learner driver, I wouldn't want to drive a Civic. I'd find another instructor with a smaller car. ;)

How do learners get on with reversing?

It must be a nightmare for new drivers with the very thick C pillars and the spoiler.

Hi,

Learners love the car and when the instructor started with it he found all except one student liked it better than his Corsa. It is no different from many other modern cars with regards vision for reversing.

Interesting re the reversing.

I learnt in a Triumph Herald (showing my age) and the trick on those was to keep the pointy bit on the rear nearside raised fairing, or whatever they are called, in line with the kerb as you reversed round the corner.

I've heard of some instructors doing a similar trick with a sticker on the rear window. :)

Sorry to wander off topic a bit, but the mention of learning in the Triumph Herald brought this back to mind.

At the age of 17 (in nineteen canteen), I bought a second hand mini from a local garage and learned to drive in that, and the old man's Morris Minor :oops:.

Going to the test centre the mini's foot brake failed completely.
Since the garage was on the way we stopped in to complain and they lent us a Herald which I used for the test.
It was the first one I had ever been in, and I got about 800 yards of practice on a straight road before the test.

The funniest bit was the "3-point turn".
You youngsters may not know this, but the Herald had a turning circle like a London taxi. The front wheels went practically to right angles when you gave it full lock.
Not being aware of that, I gave it full lock and proceeded to do a zero-point turn by doing a u-ey in a narrow side street. :D
"Aye - very good", says the examiner, "now turn by means of forward AND reverse gears". I did and I passed !

Strange car, the Herald, but I've always had a soft spot for it since.

Just a wee update.

MAKE THAT 99,000 MILES IN 18 MONTHS + STILL ORIGINAL CLUTCH! ! !

Should get a free or heavily discounted car from Honda for this one!

What a car and soon to be replaced with a newer one of the same model.

That's not much yet :D. We have a -92 Toyota Carina Eagle, Meter shows 270296.469 miles. Still has the original clutch! Japanese engineering is amazing.

Are you allowed the reversing camera on when taking the test :)

If it's fitted to the car, you are EXPECTED to use it as an auxiliary control I presume (at least thats what I told my instructor always told me).

I would have killed to learn in a Civic, I started out in a Daewoo Matiz [!!!!!!!], but I didn't get far in that, from sheer embarassment at being seen in it!!!!

True though, you should be able to drive any vehicle, think about those like my friend who learnt in an escort Van (and I did for a short while) with no back windows!!!

My Dad took his test in his dad's Ford van in the 60's and only failed because it was full of stock (owing to a flood) and the examiner was not happy during the emergency stop!!!

Hi There,

Its good to hear someone else is using a civic to teach people to drive.
I am an Instructor with a New Shape Corsa SXI 1.7 CDTI. I ordered a type S gt in DBP With HFT & Sat Nav & Rev Cam, and take delivery of it on the 1st march. i cant wait. Every single one of my pupils are just as excited as i am to get it. i spoke to the Chief Examiner at the test centre and he told me that the rev cam must be turned off whilst on test. So i Have to do a mod on it so i can turn it off . But i dont care about doing a small thing like that. As far as rear visability goes its no worse than the new corsa 3 door, which by the way is a terrible car to own and drive, worst car i have ever had, it Drives like A bag of ***t. Will Post Pics when i get it with the livery on it.

I heard examiners will not allow you to take a test in a Mini cabriolet, is there any truth in that?
