Hi everyone,

I've just registered here to get some advice on my new target, the Civic.
Never had a Japanese car before, so don't have any experience in the field. The design of the civic really cought me, but don't have info regarding the engine, specifications etc.

Looking for a 2008-2009 5 door petrol model.
1.4 or 1.8? The car is going to be used 95% in town.
Is it roomy enough for two kids in the back and a pram in the boot?
Have heard bad things regarding rear visibility? Is it that bad?

Hi mate,

I have a 1.8 Sport civic and must say I do really enjoy it. The 1.4/1.8 engine is up to you. With the 1.4 I'd be looking personally for the 1.4 iVTEC models (has around 100bhp), the 1.4 DSi seemed a little too underpowered for me. It'll take a while to get up to speed. The 1.4 iVTEC engines are just a little bit better for the weight of the civic.

I'd personally go for 1.8 as it's more flexible than the 1.4, having some power is also nice. I do predominantly city (around 20 - 30mph) and some A road driving (at 50mph) and have averaged 36ish MPG over 2000 miles. I have to say, a lot of the driving is done in stop start traffic, and I'm not the lightest with the gas pedal either at times.

I wouldn't know how much more petrol you'd save having the 1.4 petrol engines but I ASSUME it'd be a bit more than the 1.8. Again if you're not fussed about speed then a 1.4 would be fine.

In terms of Space, A couple weeks ago I had 3 men in the back of my car. It was a bit cramped (As 1 of them was 6 ft 1") but we managed to have an hour drive in pretty much relative comfort, so 2 kids won't be a problem. I have regularly, my parents and my sister in the back of the car and they find with no problems.

With 2 Car seats (which I assume you may have) I would say that a 3rd person would probably find it a bit tight in the back.

It depends how big the pram is but the boot is really big. It should fit diagonally across relatively easily (I'd suggest just taking your pram and checking boot space out yourself)

In terms of rear visibility, yes I personally find it is quite bad. Since the door handle is in the place of the rear quarter-light, and the large C pillar at the rear, there is, in my opinion, a large blindspot formed when pulling out of shallow junctions or other similar positions. Luckily the wing mirrors are large, and generally compensate for most of that. The Spoiler can also be somewhat annoying and can block rear view a bit.

In terms of reversing and parking, the wing mirrors are excellent in that department. Rear visibility isn't the greatest, but it isn't extremely bad and you get used to it.

The biggest problem I have with the Civic is the generally crashy ride. It's a bit jiggly and unsettled over bumps in the road but it is fun to drive!

Cheres guys, you are trying to influence me towards the 1.8 with success I would say. I just have to remember that the wife will be driving it every now and then, the 138 bhp of the 1.8 might be too much for her, but the 80 bhp of the 1.4dsi will be definitely too less for me, so the 98bhp of the 1.4 ivtec would be a perfect compromise...

Regarding visibility: I don't think parking is an issue, but what about take over, changing lanes?

What about reliability? Any typical issues?

What should I look out for on/in the car when the right one comes up?

Trust me 138 bhp isn't a lot. The Torque is low, so you don't get the power until the revs kick in a bit. Have your missus test drive a 1.8 and you'll see that it's manageable. When I first drove it, I thought it felt slow, like the sensation of speed was decreased. Not until you go pass around 3K revs does it really start to pull and move. Try it, it's really fun!

Changing Lanes isn't too bad, the wing mirrors are really big, and the right hand wing mirror has an extra convex section, that helps with overtaking.

Reliability with Jap cars isn't really too much of an issue, especially the 1.8's. They don't really have the clutch issues of the 2.2 diesels.

Typical Issues include A/C Relay, so I'd check the A/C works as the relay was a big problem for a lot of cars, including mine. Other than that, service history is probably the other big thing. Honda's are generally bulletproof.

Other than that, a test drive to see it's comfortable is the only other thing.
