Am I right in thinking that the air-con compressor won't kick in if there is no gas present? I have tested my relay (Denso) and that seems fine. So I took the caps off on the pipes and depressed the valve and no gas came out so I'm hoping it just needs a re-gas and everything will be fine. Can I 'hot-wire' the compressor just to see if that is at fault?

Yes, no or low gas means the system will not operate.

Do you have any visible leaks, especially on the condenser?
