hello, my air conditioning has been working fine up until recently, i thought it was that it just needed servicing, but when i took it to the garage they said it was the compressor and it would be £700 ish

say i want it cold, or to demist the window, it works for about a minute then stops..

has anyone experienced this, i dont want to pay this and it turn out to be something simple?

thanks for any advice

Very likely the relay. The normal fault is that it works fine when the engine bay is cold but as it heats up the relay breaks down and no cooling. So it works for a while then stops. Give it a try!

I would tend to agree with the OP's as with a mechanical bit of kit it doesn't normally play the intermittent game... Ask them what exactly is wrong with it, saying its faulty without a technical reason is just guess work...

Good luck and please keep us posted as always nice to find out the end result...

It is at the top (bulkhead end) of the under bonnet fusebox. Each fails differently but if I tapped mine the compressor would then start for a few seconds so that was a giveaway. Also when i removed the relay it rattled but not everyones has. Hope this helps - give it a tap!(with the air con set to Lo)

If it is clicking on and off itself it sounds like its working ok. On auto it should click on for a few seconds then off again. On a hot day it will stay on longer than a cold day. Sure its not just low on gas?

Somewhere near the compressor there'll be a small round glass window in the aircon pipework where you can check that the liquid refridgerant is circulating OK (and also check that there is sufficient flowing round the pipework)... I can't tell you exactly where to look, as I've got an Accord.

A sight glass is on the liquid receiver/dryer which is on the side of the condenser, however, I don't think the glass is fitted to the Civic.

Is the compressor rotating?
