I seem to have a problem with my Air conditioning and wondered if you had any ideas.

In January ( I think) I had my car serviced and noticed an improved performance from the A/C unit in terms of the strength of air coming through the vents. Previous to the service I had noticed that it was rather weak but forgot to mention this to the dealer.

Anyway after the service, and considering it was -17 outside, I was happy with the new 'life' the A/C had as it warmed the car up nice and quickly.

About 2 weeks ago the weather improved and the car had been sitting in direct sun for a while and when I got in the car found it hot and so turned the A/C down to 'Lo' and noticed that it didn't get cool. I didn't think much of it as the sun had gone and the outside temperature was lower than it had been so presumed it was something to do with all that.

However, today it was a good 20 degrees outside and again the car had been sitting in the Sun. I got in the car and turned the A/C to 'Lo' again and hot air came out, which I know it does at the beginning, but it never got cool as it normally did and stayed blowing fully with Hot air coming through the vents. In my journey the A/C never began to blow cool or even coolish air and the journey was about 20 minutes and would have normally been blowing very cool air by then.

Is it a trip back to the dealers do you think?

Ok HappyMan....here goes:

Your A/C system may have lost its charge of refrigerant, or the compressor may not be engaging when you turn on the A/C, or the blend air door inside the HVAC unit may be stuck in the HEAT position so no air goes through the A/C evaporator.


1. Start with the compressor. Does it engage when you turn on the A/C? If so, the compressor is working and the A/C system probably contains enough refrigerant to make cold air, so the problem is inside the HVAC unit. Replace the motor that controls the blend air door (this is a difficult job and best left to a professional since it involves tearing apart the HVAC unit -- about an 8 to 10 hour job!).
If the compressor does not engage when you turn on the A/C, see if it will run by jumping the compressor clutch wire directly to the battery (use a fused jumper wire). If the compressor works when you jump it, and the A/C blows cold air, the system contains refrigerant and the fault is likely a bad A/C compressor clutch relay or a bad clutch cycling switch or pressure switch.
If the compressor does not engage when you jump it, the problem is a bad compressor clutch.
If the clutch engages but the compressor does not turn (the belt will start to slip and squeal), the compressor is laced up and you need a new compressor.
If the compressor clutch engages and turns the compressor, but the A/C still does not blow cold air, the system is probably low on refrigerant and needs to be recharged. If you Have an A/C gauge set, hook it up and see if the system has any pressure.


2. If it is out of refrigerant or is low, check for leaks, then have the A/C system vacuum purged to remove air. After the air is out, it can be recharged with the specified amount of refrigerant. It is important to get any air out as this will reduce cooling efficiency and may make the compressor noisy.


Finally my advice to you if you know nothing about A/C service is to go to the "Stealers" and let them fix your cooling problem for you. Today's A/C systems with automatic climate control are very complex and require special tools and know-how to diagnose and repair.

my first test would be to check whether u can hear the pump + click sound when u switch on AC, if there is, then normally the AC pump is working.
then what u can do is check when the AC was topped up/re-gassed last time, normally every 2-4yrs

I'd be straight back to the dealers and ask what they have done.

I don't think you be expected to pay for what could be their mistake.

I am planning to get back to them but don't have time right now.

Probably not lack of gas then as something is telling it to heat instead of cool.
I am wondering if it's been re-set wrongly when they checked it in January.

If it needs gas someone on here had mentioned I think it was quick fit are doing it for £25. Just for info. The thread is quite new so should be findable.

Sadly living in Poland means I probably can't take up the Quick Fit offer :p.

Just got Halfords!

Could be the car's internal sensor ? - not sending temperature info to the control unit might result in a 'default' "car is cold" assumption ? - henec the heated air ...

Whatever, it's a specialist job - the Dealer or a dedicated Car AC company ...

I seem to recall from the dim and distant past a Pottsy post where the tube behind the interior aircon air grill by the steering wheel cowl could become detached causing all kinds of havoc to the aircon.

Well it worked normally today :shock:

I'll get it checked out by the Dealer all the same.

What was the outcome of this, HM?

I was about to post a tread about this problem when I decided to to a forum search first, and there it was - the topic I was looking for...:)

I experienced almost exactly the same thing in my car today - but in addition to the aircon blowing hot air when set on 'lo' mode, also there is a slight whistling sound that I haven't noticed before.

I use the 'auto' function all year round, so at least the compressor should be OK. (Hopefully) :confused:
