Hi all. When I got my 5dr 2.2 diesel few months ago I did not notice any problems with the battery. After 3 weeks I went on a short trip to Poland and left the car in my garage. I left it unlocked with the key of the car on the driver seat with window down just incase the car would lock itself up.

On my return 3 days after the car would not start. It looked like a complete power failure. I called my electrician and with the help of a starter/booster we got the car up and running in no time. He did check the voltage and the input to the battery a few days later and he said all is ok.

I than asked the dealers at Honda and they told me that leaving the key inside the car even if on the seat would still keep the electric circuit active and power would still be drained. Is this true?

I am having my car at the sprayers for a week and I am hoping that this does not happen again. I am most concerned with the key issue if it's true. How far does the key need to be so it would not drain power from the car battery?

Sounds like a load of ******** to me but why on earth would a Honda engineer make something like that up? Did he specify which 'electric circuit' is energised when the key's in the car?

AFAIK there's nothing in the Civic that can 'detect' the key. If there was, it would be equipped keyless start and all that malarky.

Agree it's a load of rubbish - the key being in the car has nothing to do with it. Most probably flat battery due to window being open and car unlocked

They said it it has to do with the immobiliser. If the window is kept down and car unlocked with the car not in ignition why should it drain any battery.

If u read the manual of the car it says something about the immobiliser being kept active but not sure about that.

3 days without use I don't expect that the battery drains

I didn't think the immobiliser sent out any wireless signals and it used the metal part of the key as a conductor to read the chip/code (whatever's in the key) when then key's in the ignition.

Seems like the usual type of comment from a Honda Technican. Have you seen the recent thread on valve clearances with the comment that they are adjusted by computor.

Seriously I can only think that some cu's on the car only switch off when the car is locked and this caused the battery to go flat. Afterall Civic have very low powered batteries, my manual states that even with everything shut down the battery will be completely flat within 3 weeks, so there must still be a large drain on the battery in comparison with previous generations of cars.

Wouold upgrading the battery help or its best to just unplag the battery when the car will not be used like when on holidays.

Problem is all the radio present would be lost i guess. Also the on board alarm is sure to drain the battery as teh car does not know that its in storage rather than out on the street

I think you just have the factory fitted battery that just needs to be replaced. it happend exactly the same to me and I just put a new one Now its ok:)

I've left my 1.8 in a hospital car park - 2 weeks - middle of winter - had to melt off ice and snow, just to get the driver's door open ! ...

Car started first time ...

There is a 'MICU' fault with some 2.2s - the subject of a Honda bulletin - check to see if your car is one of those affected, and if it has been fixed ...

Otherwise, there's a "drain to earth" somewhere, which a good auto electrician can track down - there is information somewhere in here about what the 'parked up' electrical use should be, and it's tiny ...

This is actually true to my knowledge.
Unless the car is ignition off / locked the MICU wont enter sleep mode.
Thats the way I understand it anyway.

Think R2 had an issue similar to this.
