Hi all, Just need some advice please. I have now unfortuatley obtained 12 penalty points on my licence within the 3 year 'topping up' process. Just after xmas i was caught execeeding a 60mph limit via camera van man! (too late when i saw the van and no excuse as i didnt realise i was going that fast on a very quiet country road) I had only had my Type R for 3 months (ST before that). I know speeding is no excuse and it was my fault for speeding! I was lucky not to get a ban, I got a heavy fine and 6 points ontop of the 6 points i already had for speeding!
As i am an honest guy i have notified my insurance company as people were telling me i had better do so or my insurance would be void if anything else was to happen and could end up with more points if i was found out! Now my monthly payments have jumped from a very resonable £40 a month (on 6 points at time) to £91 a month :(. Silly question but is this normal should it jump this high??
I have 5 months until renewal and panicking a bit now! will i get insured for my type R come renewal time or will i have to pay over the odds for the duration i own my car?
Has anyone had the unfortuate or similar luck as me and can offer any good insurance companies that may insure me come the time at a resonable price? I fear next renewal is going to cost the earth!
I have full NCB over twenty years driving experience had no accidents, never claimed before, my girlfriend who i did name on my current premuim is older then me, got a clean licence, had origianlly brought my premuim down at the start of cover before the extra 6 points were added!

Just for the record: 3 points March 2007, 3 points April 2010 and 6 points Dec 2010. I know insurance companies state 5 years on their terms too!

As you can imagine i am now very cautious and stick to the speed limits very strictly now and try to keep my cool when someone wishes to edge me into a race when they see me and don't want them thinking they can burn off a Type R easily lol. Yesterday, a Golf GTI 'deisel' was edging me on dual carriagway, i was nearly tempted to use V-Tec but had to give in, its just to risky! :police:

Anyway, sorry to rant on.

Any help or advice will be much appreciated.

Thanks

Im not surprised it has almost double as in their eyes your risk assesment would have doubled.

If you hadnt told them, you would technically become an uninsured driver in the event of an accident.

Simple, just dont speed. If someone wants to race with you ignore them. Its not worth it, 12 points or 0 points.

If you find it hard to resist racing on public roads even with 12 points you have got a problem.

In his fairness, though, we all speed - even if we don't admit it. This guy has admitted he shouldn't have sped, so I don't think we need to judge him too much.

Absolutely - but we all know that insurance companies will rip us of at any opportunity - just don't give them an opportunity is what I say.

If you have more points then you are more of a risk :(

Best way to find out is to put all your details into confused.com now and check what your renewal will cost you (don't use your real name or address though, then you can play about with adding mods or anything you want without it getting saved to your name)

What so you think it is normal behaviour to race people on public roads? and we all do that? and in this case be tempted even if you have 12 points

To be honest if youve had two speeding fines already and youre still racing around and speeding you should have been taken off the roads. Its not just your safety its when you hit someone else at that speed.

Yes, some of us do occasionally fracture the odd driving law but it sounds like you drive everywhere like youre on fire...

Why not swap to something more economical and slower like the CRZ? much better fuel economy & not as much temptation to drive like a loon.

Dont waste your second chance on the road!

Are you a complete goon? First off you say you've got 20 years experience driving (which would at Least make you around 37) but then say your girlfriend who's older then you to bring the premium down. I've never met anyone near 40 years old who would say something like that, let me clarify it's not that you added your girlfriend but that you state she's older to bring the premium down.

Second off you don't just get 6 points, you must have been traveling at a fair rate of knots to warrant that.
If your still be tempted into acting like a bell end on public roads (I mean street racing) then perhaps a Type R isn't for you and you need something slower

Easy ed, now take a deep breath... inhale... exhale :D:D wusa :D

OP - You would think having 6 points already that you would calm down. As ed already stated you dont just get 6 points and you must have had some idea of the speed you were doing.

I am currently on a 1 month driving ban for tailgaiting in germany in 2009 (which at the time i didnt know you could done for) so im not the one to give you a lecture on how you should drive. HOWEVER you do need to clam down and stop racing. Just look at the car and tell yourself you are faster instead of prooving the point. Thats what I do. Do I go to a track!

Little bit harsh..

C'mon people.. why do we all drive the type R? so we can get to 70mph a bit quicker?

Yes, he's been a bit foolish, but in my opinion not for speeding - everbody speeds.. he's foolish for getting caught!

I don't advocate racing on public roads, but I think speeding is different.

The speed limit was 70mph when people drove wooden cars!?

A country road where I live that's been 60mph all my life has been recently changed to a 30mph. The same day a camera van appeared on the same road - Dirty tactics.

If you don't speed, why own a type R?.. get a punto.

Rant over.

:worms:

I don't have any points.

Oh jeez, the guy knows he was in the wrong lay off him

To answer your question, yep your premium sounds like it has shot up by about the right amount and yep, expect it to be slightly higher next year with the same insurer.

As has already been said, the insurers will do everything they can to get more cash out of you, shop around ! If all your points are SP30/50 and not drink driving etc you should still get a "reasonable" premium.

Your first 3 points are due expiry this month and by applying for a new license they could get wiped off. It's difficult to declare points if they are no longer on your license as that means in the eyes of the DVLA they are not applicable and it's likely you wouldn't remember the details off the top of your head. Potentially just leaving you with 9 points...not *so* bad :)

I think we all need to take it easy and put away our rolling pins. toca72 was just ranting at his frustration, something many of us do whether it is our fault or not. By all means express an opinion but be easy on him - he knows he's in the wrong. I'm not defending what he's done but some comments here are a bit strong. As mentioned we have all been a bit heavy footed and some have paid the price in points/fine - me included.

Smile and carry on.

I'm over 50 with a perfectly clean license and consider myself to be polite, courteous and safe on the road. Having said all that, I get heartily sick of self-righteous posters who come on forums to admonish someone who happens to have trangressed the law and got caught out. I would say that if we all got points everytime we broke the highway code, nobody but nobody on here would have a license, including me. Come on guys - give this fella a break. He knows he's been daft and it sounds like he's learnt a lesson, which is the important thing. Now let's try and answer his question... :)
