hey everyone,
I've owned my FN2 for two years now and about a month ago i was finally in a position where i could buy my dream car, the FK8. I purchased my FK8 from Honda as a used approved 1 owner car. I was told by Honda that the previous owner bought the car as a retirement gift and was in his 60's but sold it as he had to immigrate. the car is in excellent condition and was really well looked after and serviced.
The original owner did do a few things to the car, hes put a Remus exhaust with carbon fiber tips with a cool sound controller for the valves and just yesterday i noticed a Mishimoto oil catch can. Honda told me the car is now pushing 460bhp (taking that with a grain of salt) and im still waiting to hear back from them regarding whats been done to the car (not sure if they even know) but the car is definitely not running stock power.

heres where i need help, ill attach the pictures to this post. the first one is located in the boot on the left side behind the little door where the tools are. there's a metal box with some plug sticking out with a red cover. He's made a quick access cut out so I'm guessing it's important. The second is under the bonnet, there are two little black boxes with wires running to the battery, both the boxes are hooked up to each (cant tell where they lead to, maybe ECU?) I know it's a long shot.

I dont know how to tell if the car has been tuned/chipped, is there any way i can find out? just like with the catch can i simply want to know whats been done so i can do any added maintenance thats required. would really appreciate anyones input and suggestions, i know its a long shot to identify them but perhaps some of you know or even have something like this.

cheers everyone!

Might be worth popping this in the fk8 side of the forum. I think it would be safe to assume that 1 of the boxes in the engine is a ecu mod of some kind. No idea about the 1 in the boot though.

Might want to take the car to a place that specialises in performance stuff for a rolling road to see what the power is, plus they may also be able to say what else has been done so you can inform your insurance company.

Yeah that's what I was thinking too, the rear one does baffle me a bit. I'll make sure to post this in the fk8 side too. Thanks mate 👍

That looks like some kind of key hole, could it be a tracker/alarm of some sort?
Assume dealer did not give you anything that might fit the socket

Hey Wilmo!
You where the first person to help me a few years ago when I bought my FN2 so it's fitting you're here now that I bought the FK8 😆
The car does have window stickers that claim it has a Honda tracking device and Honda did tell me the previous owner paid a subscription (iirc) for one. I wasn't given any key other than the two car fobs. Do you think that's the actual tracker? Why would there be a key though? I thought they just send a GPS signal? Also I'm baffled why he'd cut a hole in the boot side cover when it takes 2 seconds to take the cover off.
I'm worried the car has mods that require servicing and Ill just be completely oblivious until it causes damage due to neglect on my part.....I wish there was a online record for this like they have for MOT 🤭

The Honda tracker is probably just the MyHonda app that is soon to be retired.

Hmmm.....any guesses on what it might be? Or the two little black boxes under the bonnet? I'm thinking ECU mod but no idea about the boot one. Trying to search up what different mods for the fk8 look like on Google hasn't been very fruitful 😆

Does your remus exhaust has a valve to adjust a sound? If it does then it could be wiring for its ecu/ control. The one in boot looks like manual switch to on/off valve. Try moving boxes to see if theres any stickers or other info on them?

Would it be possible to get a few full pictures of the engine bay to get a bit more context for any other changes?

Bit dubious of the random wired boxes; As for the catch cans they do need to be drained on occasion - I imagine Radium will have instructions for that, if not you should find more information on Civicx - Usually it's just a case of removing the can and pouring out the contents.

Just went to check, the exhaust does have an adjustable valve but after looking online what the kit comes with and how it's installed it doesn't have those black boxes. It comes with a white/red box and I did find a box with "Remus" written on it in the boot where you'd have the spare wheel.
Under the bonnet there was a sticker but it simply said "item no. Power supply, input DC6-36V output 5.0V 2500ma" rather strange!

Absolutely! 😁
I've tried taking pictures of where the wires go to but they seem to just shoot down and I can't tell where they go but I took some overall pictures that hopefully show the area better. Thanks for the info about the catch can, I'll make sure to check and empty it 👍

I feel like this is a cheap lighting kit or so as it doesn't have any labels or marks on it.

Are the previous owners details on the V5?

Unfortunately as it was purchased from Honda I only received the new V5 by post several days later, so no details on the previous owner 😩

I thought so too, had foot well lighting in my FN2 but I can't find any switches/toggles to turn them on. In my FN2 there was a switch in the glove box but nothing on the fk8 from what I can see

Damn that's a shame, from the pics though it does look pretty cheap whatever it is

I agree, looks cheap. I did a bit more investigating and I realized it appeared to go down and what looks like through the firewall. I saw from inside a black wire that lead straight to the OBD2 port 🤔 it also has no name, logo or any identifying marks on it. Makes me believe it might actually be an ECU mod? What else would require to be connected to the OBD port? A bit apprehensive about unplugging it though

Can't help with that one,. I suppose you could take it to a reputable tuning company, they maybe able to help by analysing the ecu and look at the box to see what they think it is and what it's doing. Did you buy from a Honda dealership? If so take it back and ask them to remove, I also think you need to consider the mods and how this affects any warranty given with the car.
