I have seen a very nice 2012 9G 1.8 SE-T at avery good price, but it has a Category N advisory

"The vehicle is repairable and has not been structurally damaged. Can re-appear on road."

What should I be looking out for?

Ref; What is Cat N? Category N has no structural damage, with just bodywork requiring attention.

What damage has the vehicle sustained?

What you need to ascertain is exactly what was the damage.

I've heard of smallish bumps opening up seams slightly, letting water in = premature rust.

Your call.

A Cat N means it's written off but has no structural damage

It will never be worth as much as a non written-off car regardless of the reason for write off

You might also have issues insuring it.

It might have had body damage, eg scraped along the side meaning doors and wings needed replacement but not affecting chassis
It could have had water damage
It might have been stolen and then recovered after the owner had been paid off
It might have needed repairs where parts were on long back order and the insurer chose to write off rather than pay for a hire car
Or any other reason the insurance company chooses

If you know exactly what the reason was and it is cheap (at least 30% less than a non write off) then it might be OK

Otherwise, walk away

In life you get what you pay for, a cheap write off is usually cheap for a reason
