I drove the 1.6 diesel today and was very impressed. I have a 1.4 petrol and the noise meter app on my phone showed the diesel to be quieter at the same speed on the same road. I did not notice any great difference in performance compared to the 2.2 diesel. I though that the engine was extremely flexible and free revving. I was disappointed to see that the IMID system was still the same and it is just as difficult to switch to see the range remaining. The car has new wheels and the aerodynamic aids on the rear wings are larger, otherwise it seems to be the same car. Would be very tempted to buy one!

Very much looking forward to trying this engine. I have driven the 2.2 idtec (having an ictdi already) and thought it was good, just shame about the longer gear ratios - although appreciate why this is the case. Am therefore keen to try the 1.6 idtec, but am still wondering if it will be worth the extra cash over the ivtec.

Ah I didn't know that 1.6 was out. Cheers for the feedback. Honda needs this engine, that range was lacking.

Where did you drive this car?

My local Honda dealer got a white one in on 20th Dec. He has more coming in this week. The dealer is John Adams in Portlaoise. I reckon that this model will sell very well.

Yesterday I also tested the 1.6 ( car had only 45km...)
It is marvelous, very refined and smooth engine and suits the Civic perfectly
After that I drove the new 2.2 Crv, and I must admit that the Civic feels a lot more fun to drive, and in my first opinion more silent for roadnoise and engine.
The steering is very reponsive and direct, something I am missing in the CRV, probably due to the fact that the car is too high to make the steering more direct.

I'm still waiting to drive one and I work at the bloody factory!! Lol I have the 2.2 ES at the mo and I'm even more impressed with it than the crv 2.2 EX. Quality has certainly improved a lot. I'm a bit worried the 1.6 will feel slow tho as the 0-60 time appears to be 2 seconds slower than the 2.2 and only a second different than a 1.4 Jazz unless they've improved it since I read that on the Honda website. :)

I also own a 2.2 and had a drive in the 1.6. I was very impressed with the smoothness of the engine and it didn't feel slow at all. It felt like a petrol engine with loads of torque. It deserves to sell well.

I have finally driven one of the 1.6 diesels and can honestly say that the 'man in the street' wouldnt be able to tell if it had a 2.2 or 1.6 in it. also got to compare it to several competitors, VW, Ford,Bmw, Volvo, Toyota, Hyundai etc and it is a very very strong car.

imid display now works properly BUT will not be backwards compatible with 2012 models so YOU CANT have your car updated.

NH Dan, do you know if the 9G now comes with standard DAB radio and if it does, is it a DAB only or DAB+ as well?

Thanks.

Honda dont seem to have published anything on fuel figures other than the average "78MPG".

Can you supply any frurther information as to urban and extra urban so that we can get a true flavour of what to expect from it.?

EX comes as standard on the 1.6,with options to add to the SE and ES. Not sure of the 1.8 and 2.2 availability yet other than the 2.2 SE is withdrawn.

Fuel Figures are in mpg (l/100km): Urban 70.6 (4.0),
Extra Urban 85.6 (3.3), Combined 78.5 (3.6). CO2 emissions: 94 g/km.

Any info on engine weight? How much of a saving there is over the 2.2?

Those MPG figures are excellent!

the car in all is about 50 kilos lighter. eveything is stripped out/off of the engine. Its so well balanced, the balancer shafts are no more. the fuel primer system is out, and a hand primer installed as its so rare that its needed. extremely low friction parts and components mean at some stages its some 60% down on friction.

Genuinely, this is the first in a line of very very good engines. Honda have stated publically and in the trade that they want to be number 1 in Fuel Economy in each sector within 3 years, this is just the start.

and as for the noise, its quieter because the 1.6 now has active noise cancellation, it spics up sub 100db noise, switches the frequency and plays it back into the car, cancelling out the noise and rumbles. Very, very clever stuff.

Are you sure the car has active noise canceling?
Then they should advertise this no?

i'm absolutely positive that it does and they do advertise it.

The 1.6 iDTec isn't officially launched until 18th Jan and as its only on the 1.6 iDTec, it will part of the sales spiel from then onwards.

Sounds like a solid family car. I'm looking forward to what new engines we might get now over the coming years.
