Hi everyone,
Really sorry, im another new poster with a problem.
Iv just bought a 2006 civic 2.2 diesel and absolutely love it.
But the problem is i didnt realise how big of a problem the vsa light being on was.

The vsa and abs light is on all the time, along with check engine light and flashing glow plug light. (Its like christmas again)
I havent had chance to take it to a garage to plug in yet.

I think my problem is the vsa modulator.

So my question is if the problem is the modulator, can this be repaired or is it a replace job?

Also is there other faults that are easier to check to eliminate first.

If it is a replace job does anyone have a list of the serial number of the newer modulars that have the modified part, so i could maybe buy a second hand one.

Im in the uk.

Can anyone help me pull my pants back up?

Why do peeps always suspect the most expensive part of a system when they have done nothing to investigate the actual fault?
Get it diagnosed, either by a Honda dealer or someone who has the full HDS stuff. VSA/ABS faults do not show up on the el-cheapo OBD devices.

its not too expensive to buy a code reader to read abs codes
and saves all the guess work
when my abs light came on my mate had just gone on 3 week holiday so couldn't go to his garage to read the code
so I bought a foxwell code reader then bought abs sensor from ebay and total cost was 40 quid cheaper than a sensor from honda
and ive used the same code reader on about a dozen or more cars since

Sorry im getting carried away. I will check with a garage.

Im presuming its the expensive part as iv worked out iv bought from a trader, who has prob already scanned it.

What does a flashing glow plug light normally mean, what is the common problem that causes this? Or is this another code reader thing.

Lots of errors could easily be as simple as a bad battery or earth.

If you purchased from a trader then give it them back to resolve all the issues, that is your right. Unless you purchased the car knowing the issues existed (for a discount).

If taking it back isn't an option, I'd go with the following:
Pull the battery (Disconnect both terminals) for 15 minutes - This resets all ECUs and may clear the faults if they are down to wonky ECU Logs.

If they re-appear, take the car to a Honda dealer, or somebody with a HDS (Honda Diagnostic System) scanner to read the ABS / VSA faults; This can't be done with a cheap OBD2 scanner. There is a silver foil "hack" that also lets you read the codes without a HDS lurking on the forum if you want to do the work yourself.

This'll give you the fault; I've seen a few people needing to replace VSA Sensors; I don't imagine the VSA Module will be at fault - So do your diagnostics first!

As for the glowplug fault, I'll go out on a limb and say you've got a broken glow plug :)
A quick google will yield the method for testing glow plugs with a simple multimeter using continuity tests; Using that you can work out which glow plug(s) need replacement - Probably worth doing as it's getting chilly at the moment!

The foil trick is for 'bodywork' codes, not ABS/VSA. However there is a way to read ABS/VSA codes by linking pins 4&9 on the diagnostic port, but I only know how to do this on the Accord. However I have seen it described on this forum.

Strangely, on the i-CDTi the glow plug warning light can flash on at periods of low fuel rail pressure, which can be due to the fuel filter needing replacement. But a better indicator of fuel pressure problems are error codes P1065 and/or P0087

Ahh ok cheers, i was going to be cheeky and ask to borrow your machine, but your a bit too far.
Ive got it in a friends garage now checking the fault codes.

Do you have breakdown cover with a reputable firm i.e. AA/RAC they will read the code for you for free? just say you are worried it has broke down they will come out.

Cheers.

Iv got it back and it came back as just an abs sensor.
Iv got it changed today and took it for a spin and the abs is kicking in way too soon.
As soon as i touch the brakes it starts pulsating the brake pedal.

Does anyone know why this is?

The vsa/abs light has gone now i changed the abs sensor.

if its as icy where you are as it is where I am its possible its the weather

if you got it done in a garage go back maybe its a slightly dodgy sensor or they havnt cleaned all the old debri out

I litrally touch the brakes with a little pressure.
when i took the old sensor off it had black gunk on the sensor and on the teeth on the hub, i cleaned this off.

Do you think if the other side is as dirty that this could cause the issue?

The Vsa/abs light isnt on, would being dirty make the light come on.

id say you need to run a live data test to see all 4 wheel speeds
you would expect the light to come on really if there was any fault

i had the same thing abs kicking under light braking below 30mph above 30 abs behaved itself no warning light on the dash either
that happened for a day and the next morning ABS / VSA warning lights came on
diagnostics is telling me it's the front left sensor gone open circuit which could be either be the wiring ( broken wire or corrosion in one of the connectors from the abs sensor wire ) or a broken abs sensor

first thing to check is the wiring (easy option ) and if that's ok it's down to a dodgy sensor

get your mechanic to check the connector plugs for corrosion and a good fit

as already said live data would tell you if the sensor is doing it's job

Cheers, iv just taken it for a long drive and i now see the vsa light.

Does anyone know if a dirty abs sensor will give these symptoms.

I will try cleaning first if so.

is it the abs AND the vsa light your are seeing on or just the vsa and are they on permanently ?

if it's just the vsa light coming on every now and again that could be down to the weather and the car trying to spin it's wheels or loosing grip on acceleration

Abs kicks in if a wheel or more stops
vsa kicks in if a wheel or more spins faster than the others

both use the wheel speed sensors for reference

When i start the car there is no lights on the dash, and i feel the abs pumping the brake pedal on very little pressure pushing the brake pedal.
But after a few mins the vsa and abs lights come on.

I got a garage to plug in previously and came back it was left rear abs sensor.
I have swapped this out. But now this. Lol.

The old sensor was gunked up real bad, so im guessing the other side is the same.

Could my symptoms be a dirty abs sensor on other side?
