Hey folks.
Over the past few weeks i've been thinking more and more of changing my 2.2 Civic. It is a hard decision as I really like it - so much so i've owned it for over 6 years and by far the longest ive owned a car!

That said it is now 11years old. Thing is I can't see anything else in the recent Honda stable that is as versatile, relatively quick, frugal and reliable as the 2.2. So where do I look?

Don't need to go bigger (mostly in the car on my own, have a CR-V as family transport) car and i do 40 miles a day of mixed driving. Often stuck on motorway traffic but also like a B road blast when it is quiet. Needs to be newer than the Civic and reliable. 10k max. What would you look at?

I swapped mine for a new Suzuki Swift SZ5 1.0 Boosterjet SHVS and don't regret it one bit.

It's a fantastic little car, does 50mpg around town and more on a run, is almost as big inside as the Civic was for the kids (albeit with a smaller boot) and is packed with tech that you have to pay for in other makes and handles like a go-kart. The interior dash and fittings are a bit hard but no worse than the Civic, it's very well screwed together and comfy and, to top it all, Suzuki have a good reliability record.

Had the opportunity of a low mile 9th recently from a family member. While more 'grown up' and nicer inside the engine range on the 9G isn't of any interest im afraid.

Suzuki Swift is something ive been looking at. The 1.6 sport meant to be a hoot (prev gen) Dont think the newest version in any spec in my potential price range.

How about, the pre-facelift 9G with the 2.2 Diesel - Though to memory, in the 9G it may have a DPF.
It does indeed have a DPF. I've had both a 2.2 cdti and a 2.2 I-dtec both cracking engines. If OP does indeed do 40 miles a day can't see an issue with DPF. Great fuel economy , 9th gen 2.2 doesnt have the 8th gens looks but it's better in almost every other regard. Better ride, economy, sound inside cabin, clutch. Has lovely torque and 150bop so it's quick enough for every type of driving needed. Mine does mixed driving also of around 40-50miles every day or so and I've just hit 4k without any issues. Oh road tax is £20 and services are much cheaper.

I'd have loved to still have my 2010 si but I don't regret switching.

same dilemma i keep thinking of changing the car then I look at it and think there's nothing else I like more atm , so I've gave up on the idea of changing it and I'm just going to make it better looking already have a few idea's :wink3: also thinking of buying a cheap run around and just use the civic for weekends..

Thanks for all of the responses. Iirc the 9G 2.2 finished around 2013 so even now the youngest cars are 6 years old. To be honest there isnt much out there - dont much like the Fiesta ST and Polo Gti outside my price range. SEAT Cupra rare and again few within budget.

Don't know. Might just end up keeping the Civic ?

Mine's 6 and it still looks and runs great at almost 70k. I had many options but chose this car over others newer and more expensive because it was a great price and I knew what I was getting with the engine and car itself as its so similar to the 8th Gen.

The money I saved has meant I've got to do things to the car I wouldn't have considered and I'm getting the car I want at the end.

I also prefer the pre facelift front end. Aside from the grill I wouldn't change it. Would have looked so much better with a nice black metal grill.

I own a 2007 car myself and i haven't found anything yet that ticks all the boxes.

Sometimes the grass isn't greener and if the car you've got does the job just fine then why the itch to get rid of it?

Me personally i would probably be looking elsewhere away from Honda, like you say there isn't too much in the way of offerings and you can get better (IMO) cars for the money, The only other choice i was considering at the time was the Focus ST when i got my CTR as nothing else was taking my fancy, TBH i never really fell in love with the CTR, it was to me just a "decent" little hot hatch but it never lit my world on fire if you get me, i still miss the 5 series M Sport it replaced, so much so that I've been looking at cars recently again but what i want changes week to week (535D M sport, Ranger Wildtrak, Impreza WRX etc), but I'll still keep driving the civic till i decide and/or bite the bullet on a new one.

Did see a Nice Integra DC5 last week though....

Im thinking of moving on as there are a few things I reckon will need changed soon - all suspension/ball joints/mounts are 85k/11 years old and will be past their best , my driver seat stitching (leather) has suprisingly started to come away, alloys really need a refurb amongst other (very minor) niggles and i currently have a fuel leak which is going into the garage to get fixed tomorrow (corroded fuel line i think) . I am happy to put these right but only if im keeping the car. Already had 2 new goodyear eagles and quality oil/filter change in the last few weeks.
Could do CTR again but done that before.
Keep getting drawn to Accord CL1 or Volvo V70R imports but must remind myself its meant to be newer and similarly frugal ?
Was just putting it out there. Know its a great Honda (Civic) forum but was interested to see what people move onto if a newer Civic didnt meet their needs.

Mazda Cx 3
or Mazda MX5 RF if I have a mid life crisis and forget how much stuff I pack for a holiday and a airshow. I think it'll take a medium sized holdall and thats it.

Those bits are hardly expensive to get sorted. Wheel refurb and maintenance shouldn’t be more than £500 all in worst case scenario.

I was looking at a Lexus rx450h but decided against it in favour of the gs450h.

Have also given thought to the outlander phev but the cost of purchase for all of these plus the issue of finding an owner as careful/proud as myself is slim to none with my budget.
