Is it possible your old phone had lesser than 32 gb disk drive?

Flash drive etc must be no higher than 32 gb and formatted as fat32.
(max 700 folders and 65353 files)

Success

No it's because the newer Samsungs don't have a normal usb storage mode but instead MTP mode which mostly just works on windows/mac....
Better off with a USB stick

Are you sure about that? If this is the reason maybe there is an application or a trick with which the mobile can be regognized in the usb slot.

Yes I'm sure and I've been down that road with my previous car.
There's "supposedly" a app for a rooted android but it never worked for me so I wouldn't go down that path really.
