I bought my Civic a few weeks ago. Full set of independent garage stamps but not a single receipt so can't really tell much about its history other than it had some as the car is pretty solid the way it drives, sounds and looks (other than a few odd chips here and there).

I've always serviced my cars with recommended independent garages to keep the labour quality high and costs low. I'm down in South East London, happy to travel a little bit once a year just for a piece of mind. I've always liked the idea of garages that can take care of everything but that's never been the case so I've always had one for servicing and parts, and another one for tyres and alignment/tracking.

Lately I've been looking for a garage for my Civic. After some digging and a number of phone calls I narrowed my list to three places: two not quite specialised but highly recommended garages, and my nearest Honda dealer just to see the difference.

The things I enquired included:
- Interim service (H12)
- Full service (H12+)
- MOT
- Tyre Fitting
- Wheel Alignment
- Aircon Conditioning

Here's what I've found:

It turns out that servicing at my nearest Honda dealer would be 15-25% more expensive than with both of the indy shops, which somewhat reflects the cost of OEM parts. Not quite the ~50% mark I was sort of expecting.

I was also mind blown to find out that Honda does tyre fitting 25% cheaper than another three local tyre specialists. The prices for MOT, wheel alignment, aircon conditioning were all comparable.

Have I happen to boil my search down to rather expensive garages or has independent garages in London gone mad? 20% extra for OEM parts and a Honda stamp in history book doesn't sound like such a bad deal, really.

Unless there's something I'm missing?

My local independent quoted me £60 cheaper than Honda. I rang Honda who then decided to give me a £70 discount to keep my custom. The advertised price is not always the best price! Get on the phone and see what happens :wink3:
