I'd be more concerned with rubbing down and treating your surface rust before it gets any worse.
I took off my heat shields when they started rattling. I didn't find it got particularly hot under there. The cat is in the engine bay so most of the heat is around there rather than under the car. Don't know if it's any different on the 2.2 or FN2, mines a 1.8
