eBay Tuning Boxes

Hi,

Was going to get my Civic Ex 2.2Ctdi remapped but seen these tuning boxes on eBay for around £75.
After searching sites for tuning boxes I see others retail around £300. Is there much difference in the tuning box I go for?

The more expensive they are.... the better they are..ie Digital instead of Analogue resisters

Personally I would go for a remap - all a tuning box does is trick your stock ecu map into fueling it more... (to my understanding) have a search around for more info before committing to a box, my money would be on a map any day of the week though

Getting mine remapped next week - wouldn't even consider one of these boxes.
If you get a Digital one, then they are just like a remap because they change other parameters, not just over fuel the engine, like the cheap analogue ones do.
So please dont put ALL Tuning boxes in the same category..They are Chalk and Cheese!
Good thing about them, is that they are removable in a couple of minutes and you can sell them on when you sell the car..Like I did :p

Quite interesting robbo, are there any makes that you would recommend? Do they change all the parameters a remap does? Will it potentially give you the same setup as a remap?

Wouldn't really consider one of these boxes as I'm planning on a re-map, but good to keep up to date with tech :)

What do you mean by a digital resistOr???
My mistake Robbo51 never seen one that changes parameters! (Ignorance is bliss)
What could you reccommend? And would you reccommend one over a remap?
i know a guy who runs one with a remap!? he getz plenty of power thats for sure
I run a tuning box on my car and I would definitely recommend it, but it wasn't dirt cheap (£280).

I might have had a remap but my car is a company car so I needed it to be removable and I want to take it with me when I change my car. I run a Bluespark Automotive Pro plus boost tuning box It plugs into both rail pressure and boost pressure and changes both together.

There's a lot more to decent tuning boxes than resistors, any that are worth having will be proper microprocessor based units, not resistors, digital or otherwise.

A remap is as others have said is still a good option though. I've had remaps on my own cars in the past, I've been impressed and never had a problem with them either.
Sorry for my ignorance but what are we talking about by "tuning box"?
The only thing I can think of that I'm familiar with are the likes of Power Commanders for motorcycles - and these are fantastic and provide the exact options that a remap will, but are removable and can be adjusted with just a laptop.

Is a tuning box (one of the more expensive ones, at least) basically the same as this?
Ebay tuning boxes are generally the kiss of death to any engine... they will not do it any good tbh... :/

No, ebay tuning boxes are generally a few cresistors that fool the car into altering it's fuelling, i.e making it run rich all the time by thinking it's cold etc. And will knacker your engine quickly... :(

BTW, apologise if I've hit any random keys but fingers are a touch cut up atm :)

ok so digital tuning boxes have been recommended. Are there any particular brands I should look into?

What do you mean?..Have you never made a spelling mistake?
You should get out more
SOME tuning boxes can be ok (i.e. average) but please take any figures they quote you with a big 'ole pinch of salt, especially those relating to economy increases.

IMHO you will never get anywhere near a proper remap with just a tuning box, but I guess it all depends on exactly what you are looking for.

Tell me, what is it you want to see improved?

I do have experience of Tuning boxes....and remaps
What increases in power and economy did you get from yours?
Was it Analogue OR Digital?

Course I have - it was the digital resistor that I was actually interested in rather than the spelling of it. Perhaps you meant a digital tuning box rather than simply a few resistors in a box? Apologies if I misunderstood your post.
I do actually go out quite a lot, though not usually to wash and polish the car!
