During the recent snowfall my partner appears to have severely damaged the ECU on her 2007 Civic 2.2 Diesel Type S GT from using the wipers when the windscreen had snow/ice on it. Her description of the incident sounds just like the one at the start of this thread.

She called the RAC out and they were getting multiple errors of no communication with the ECU so would only recover the car. A car electronics specialist is coming tomorrow to investigate, but I am assuming he will say a new ECU is needed.

A new ECU from Honda is circa £1300 which is pretty much how much the car is worth, so not a good option in my opinion. A quick eBay search indicated the ECU’s could be bought used for closer to £50. So I have a few questions I was hoping someone could help me with please.

- Can the ECU be replaced by any 2006-20011 2.2 Diesel Civic ECU? Or would it need to be more specific e.g. from the same year/Type S GT etc?
- Would the used ECU need to be ‘coded to the car’? Would Honda need the car to do this?
- Is it easy to fit? I swapped the ECU on my DC5 when I had it years ago and it was literally a 5 minute job as it was right under the glove-box. My research indicates the ECU on the 2.2 Civic is to the left of the glove-box; is it easy to get access to? I couldn’t find anything conclusive on the forum, and the car is parked on a family members drive a fair distance away so I haven’t had a chance to have a poke around.

For 50quid its worth a punt on a second hand ECU although you'll need to get the keys matched to it. I'd say any 2.2 iCTDi ecu will fit as there's no variation between 2.2 engines. Just try and get one that matches your year.

I'd imagine there would be a slight difference between the I-CTDi and the I-DTEC ECU's?

A replacement ECU will need the injectors to be coded as well as the immobilizer. This could be done using a Honda Diagnostic System (HDS), which aren't exclusively a dealer thing (many Honda specialists will have one). Also the more common Snap-On diagnostic system is available at many garages and can also code/configure a replacement ECU, but they would need to also have the appropriate Snap-On 'key'.
