That sounds like something loose resonating. possibly the exhaust manifold heatshield or air filter housing?

I can hear a tapping noise just after the engine starts. I don't know what it is, but maybe one of the hydraulic tappets or something driven by the aux belt? Is it worse hot or cold?
Best thing is to remove the aux belt and see if the noise goes away... if it does it's easier to investigate with the belt still off.

I can swear about 2 days ago, I get a strange oil/fume smell in the car whilst driving, espeically when its cold.
Will this be a warranty repair - although mine is on a 55plate with 112k miles?

The sound stays when its warm. in fact it gets worse off when engine is warm, can hear the engine tiring out when turning the engine off (so thoguht it was the chain).
Initially i thought it would be the tappet, this was a common problem in the good old B16A engines but thought they would have corrected it on this newer engines, as they did later with the 1.8 vti engines.
I do hope it is the tappet, will take a closer look tonight or in the morning, taking of the cover.

You can't easily take off the i-CTDi cam cover... the injectors all need to come out first! In fact, lots of other things also have to come off, which all makes it a pretty big job.
If you can smell exhaust then it could be a cracked manifold, or it could be a leaking injector gasket... which might just make the sound you have recorded. A leaking injector gasket can be confirmed by either feeling the escaping gases by putting your hand above the injector with the engine running (or spray WD40 round a suspected injector and look for any bubbling) or the leak may be obvious by the build-up of soot.

Some symptoms:
have just driven home 30 miles from work.. the smell is getting worse. I can't breath in Diesel. turned off the heat/blower, yet still the centre cabin console is hot and remains hot, never noticed this before. (under the Sat nav controls > to the slidey centre console compartment)
Also noticed the mileage MPG counter decreasing a lot faster than usual despite driving at 50-60 on the motorway.
Will give it a look hopefully tomorrow morning, driving the car with the fumes is becoming unbearable.

Buy an official Honda filter and replace it.
