Did a 280 mile trip in the type r yesterday, all seemed to be ok, noticed as I was driving back through town a noise that sounded a bit like a heat shield rattle. Got home and opened the bonnet and it sounds like it’s definately top end noise and possibly from the timing chain side. Is it easy to check if the tensioned has packed up or is not working properly? Still drives fine, just the noise. Oil levels are all ok.

Not sure if honest. Started it this morning and it sounds more like diesel knock.

Would valve clearances cause this? Idle was and still is smooth, just noisy now!

Checked the valve clearances and that are all fine, think it may be the chain, and or the tensioner. Turning the engine over manually with a spanner on the crank, the chain has uneven tension on it and is jumping as if it has possibly stretched, if that is possible! Will get it to the garage tomorrow for a proper diagnosis.

Quick update.
Issue now resolved, looks like I have been lucky depending on how you look at it.
Basically the timing chain tensioner had given up and was retracting instead of holding tension. Chain had a small amount of stretch but nothing much.
Changed the chain, tensioner and guides while in there so is all nice and fresh now. Bit quieter too. Lucky the chain didn't jump a cog really. Financially not good on top of Xmas, but cheaper than a new engine.
