Hi guys, I signed up here today asking for some help. I shall outline the problem as best I can. Obviously I will be taking it to a mechanic as soon as possible, but if anyone can point me in the right direction maybe I can ask the mechanic to check certain things he may overlook.

My car has a Scorpion back box, an AEM Cai and its been lowered, no other modifications have been done.

A few days ago, when hitting VTEC the car would basically sound like its backfiring, the exhaust sounded almost like it was blocked, and there was no sudden rush. The car didn't "go", it lost a lot of its guts. There was no blue/black smoke I could see behind me, and the oil levels are always kept high. I was going to take it to a mechanic, but I had to wait until pay day so thats why I haven't taken it in sooner.

Today though (its been pouring torrentially with rain by the way), again at seemingly random intervals, the car would go extremely sluggish, and there would be slight grinding noises. This happened in any gear, and at any speed. When it stopped happening, the car responded perfectly and had all of its guts. I did not risk VTECing it though.

It only happened to start of with when I was going downhill, so I thought it may have been the handbrake locked together on on of the disks, but then it happened when I was stuck at the lights, even when not in gear or in motion.

I'm really panicking and my first thought is perhaps water in the engine? Could I have spun a bearing? Is the gearbox gone?

Any help or insight would be really appreciated, getting some idea of what could be wrong will help me sleep a bit easier tonight as my mind is wild with different theories. Its odd because when it didn't grind or act sluggish the car felt as rapid and eager as always, then it would go weird for a few seconds or no more than a minute at a time then back to normal.

Thank you.

You answered your own question there IMO.
Do you have a CAT fitted ?
Could be a water pump, or other driven bearing seizing.
Could be lots of things.
Do you have air con ?

Sounds like an ignition problem to me...

Has happened to a couple of my previous cars when ignition leads / dizzy cap have been on their way out.

Try driving slowly, putting it in 5th and putting your foot down. If it judders and misfires then you definitely need to check leads, spark plugs etc... as the cylinders are not getting enough of a spark.

Funnily enough wet weather can make this worse as the moisture in the air will make dodgy leads more likely to arc together and provide less power to the spark plugs.

Try spraying them with wd40 and taking it for a ride as this is a good insulator, if all of a sudden it drives normal again you need to change your leads.

Hope this is of some help..

Could be the chain tensioner on its way out being intermittent at the moment, meaning timing goes off at higher RPMs.

Could be catastrophic if it breaks. Get it looked at ASAP, and don't drive it if you don't have to. Definitely wouldn't hit VTEC.

If the tensioner goes, you're talking all sorts of wrong with the valves opening at the wrong time and it could get expensive.

I could of course be wrong, it could be the coil pack, but wouldn't risk it personally.
