Hi all,

Still need your help with this.
I have been battling this problem for about 5 weeks now!
My CTR has been throwing the fault code "Check System - Engine".
Its been into Honda 4 times now to try and diagnose and correct the problem, code has been cleared each time but then reoccurs about a day later after picking the car up.

So far Honda have tried:
-Replacing air filter
-Replacing fuel filter
-Replacing fuel pressure regulator

I am going to have to take it back in as the error is back, 1 day after picking it up!!!
All I can possibly think of trying from here is:
-Oxygen sensor
-Injectors
-Thorough check for exhaust gas leak

Any other suggestions, anyone else had this issue??

Thanks for the link jazzman.
I've been doing plenty of internet searches myself too.
Car is booked to go back in next Tueday. This time I am really going to push for replacement of the oxygen sensor!

Well, the saga continues.
Had my CTR in at Honda last week as I've still got this 'check system error' (code P0171).
Honda replaced the MAF sensor, reset ECU, and re-calibrated idle.
2 days later, check system error is back :(
Sooo, car will have to go back in AGAIN for them to investigate the issue!!!!!
In summary, car has already been in 5 times
Honda have replaced:
- air filter
- fuel filter
- fuel pressure regulator
- MAF sensor

Only things I have on my list of possible causes for this particular error are
- Injectors
- Front heated oxygen sensor

Will see which one Honda wants to do next!

I cant be the only one going through this problem :S

DTC Troubleshooting: P0171 (45), P0172 (45)


DTC P0171: Fuel System Too Lean





NOTE:
  • Before you troubleshoot, record all freeze data and any on-board snapshot, and review the general troubleshooting information.
  • If any of the DTCs listed below are indicated at the any time as DTC P0171 and/or P0172, troubleshoot those DTCs first, then recheck for P0171 and/or P0172.
P0102, P0103: Mass air flow (MAF) sensor
P0107, P0108: Manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor
P0133, P1157, P2238, P2252, P2A00: Air fuel ratio (A/F) sensor (Sensor 1)
P0134, P0135: Air fuel ratio (A/F) sensor (Sensor 1) heater
P0137, P0138: Secondary HO2S (Sensor 2)
P0141: Secondary HO2S (Sensor 2) heater
P2646, P2647, P2648, P2649: VTEC system
P0401, P0404, P0406, P2413: Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system
P0443: EVAP canister purge valve
1.Check the fuel pressure.
Is the fuel pressure OK?

YES - Go to 2.

NO -


2.Check for vacuum leaks at these parts:

  • PCV valve
  • PCV hose
  • EVAP canister purge valve
  • Throttle body
  • Intake manifold
  • Brake booster hose
  • Brake booster
  • Intake air duct
Are the parts OK?

YES - Go to 3.

NO - Repair or replace parts with leaks, then go to 10.


3.Turn the ignition switch OFF.

4.Disconnect the vacuum hose (A) from the EVAP canister purge valve (B) on the throttle body, and connect a vacuum pump/gauge to the hose.


5.Apply vacuum to the hose.
Does the hold vacuum?

YES - Go to 6.

NO - Replace the EVAP canister purge valve, then go to 10.

6.Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 3,000 rpm (min-1) without load (in neutral) until the radiator fan comes on, then let it idle.

7.Check for these conditions:

  • ECT SENSOR 1 above 80 °C (176 °F)
  • Transmission in neutral
  • All electrical loads off

8.Monitor the ENG SPEED in the DATA LIST with the HDS, and hold the engine speed at 4,500 rpm (min-1). Once the engine speed is met, hold the accelerator pedal steady for more than 10 seconds.
Did the engine speed vary more than 100 rpm (min-1) from 4,500 rpm (min-1)?

YES - Repeat 8.

NO - Go to 9.


9.While holding the engine speed at 4,500 rpm (min-1), check the MAF SENSOR in the DATA LIST with the HDS.
Is there about 14-20 gm/s?

YES - Check the engine valve clearances and adjust if necessary. If the valve clearances are OK, replace the injectors, then go to 10.

NO - Replace the MAF sensor/IAT sensor, then go to 10.


10.Turn the ignition switch ON (II).

11.Reset the ECM with the HDS.

12.Do the ECM idle learn procedure.

13.Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 3,000 rpm (min-1) without load (in neutral) until the radiator fan comes on, then let it idle.
14.Test-drive under these conditions:

  • ECT SENSOR 1 above 80 °C (176 °F)
  • Transmission in neutral
  • All electrical loads off
NOTE: DTC P0171 and/or P0172 may take up to 80 minutes of test driving to set. Using the HDS, monitor the long term fuel trim (LT FUEL TRIM) or the air fuel feed back average (AF FB AVE). If the long term fuel trim/air fuel feed back average stays within 0.80-1.25, there is no problem at this time.

15.Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs with the HDS.
Are any Temporary DTCs or DTCs indicated?

YES - If DTC P0171 or P0172 is indicated, go to 1. If any other Temporary DTCs or DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting.

NO - Troubleshooting is complete.n

Thanks Randomjointer,
The car is going back in on Monday for Honda to confirm that it is throwing the same error code. If so, then probably oxygen sensor or injectors to be replaced. Problem is they will need to order the parts out of Japan, which could face delays these days.

Well picked the car up from Honda this afternoon. They spent 5 hrs on the car, basically re-checking everything that they had been working through in the service schedule. Apparently the o2 sensor is not a symptom of this fault code for the type R. It is for the Si, but apparently not the type R.
So, the situation is, if my baby throws the fault code again I'm getting replacement Injectors!

Did you ever get to the bottom of this? I have the same issue and don't want to start throwing money at replacing parts that are perfectly fine

*sarcastic tone*I really am sure it is just a fault for the Si and not the Type R*sarcastic tone*.

If it is not the injectors or happens after and injector replacement hit up the ACCC

This will make them do it
Warranties against defects

Since Jan 1st 2012 you can get a refund or replacement of a faulty product.

Since the issue has not be resolved tell them this.
