After 2.5 years of owning a Civic Sport i-cdti, I'm changing to an Accord Tourer EX i-cdti (06 facelift model) this coming week. I hope to post my impressions of that later in the week :)

I know I'm going to miss the Civic's unique look, its dashboard and magic seats, but I'm looking forward to the improved refinement and ride of the Tourer, along with its EX features. Ultimately though it has been the old fashioned rear suspension of the Civic that has led to my decision not to trade in for another - although the torsion beam design gives great boot space, for me it has become too basic a flaw to compromise over any longer. Even with improved dampers the firm ride and thumping over rough roads isn't good enough imho.

The Civic is for me a flawed diamond - if the suspension had been better sorted it would have been an absolute world-beater! The dealer told me that a new Civic is due towards the end of 2010 - if that retains all the good attributes of the current one, and has good suspension, then it will be a very fine car.....

Congrats on the new car. If the Civic was disappointing you then the Accord should give you much more satisfaction.

Good luck with the Accord

How much of a difference did the Konis make to ride and handling in the long run ?
Hi Munro - handling was excellent after the Koni's and has remained so, no problems at all with that and my earlier reviews stand as written. Combined with the stock springs the ride was much tauter and didn't crash and bash as it did before. But the nature of the non-independent rear suspension wasn't for me in the long run, especially with the state of a lot of urban roads I have to use, just not quite civilized enough for me now!

The 06 Tourer is a nice car, but as you say, a lot more "main stream" than the Civic.
The Civic certainly beats the Accord for funky design, and the interior and boot space are great too. Pity that Honda used suspension that was 'mainstream' in the 1980's!

The design of the Accord tourer has the edge in my opinion over most other estates cars on the market, although I know it won't float everybody's boat - but it does have double wishbone independent suspension.... :)

The problem is there is nothing else out there for reasonable money which is as "funky" as the Civic, but I am also starting to come around to wanting "real" suspension in my next car.

It's a tricky one, trying to find funky and good together.... Anything funky in this list?

Ford: Focus or Mondeo
Honda: Accord
VAG: this list
BMW 1,3

Any others?

I think the point is that you can't find the Civic's level of funkiness in other makes / models - the Fords probably do the best suspension, good to drive if not necessarily that good to look at. The C30 is a bit different, but it doesn't come close to the Civic's cleverness for interior and boot space as far as I can see. The Civic is also blessed with that lovely diesel motor too...

Honda: Accord - Yes, not as funky as the Civic, but still :D
VAG: this list - The Golf is a nice car, as is the Passat - but funky? :confused:
BMW 1,3 - 1 is too cramped. 3 is expensive when you add goodies..
Volvo C30 - maybe... small boot though

Yep - so nothing funky in that list. It seems they are mutually exclusive.

I like Fords to drive, but they are both a dull and "cheap" experience. The VAG cars are good to drive, good with quality but possibly even more dull than the Fords. So I'd take them over Ford because the dullness is easier to live with than the grotty interior.

The Accord is the annoying one. The 03-08 cars are just great to drive and well made. Again just lacking in the funky department. The 09 cars I think look great both in and out, but are not as good to drive as the older cars (ATS excepted). Grrrrr.

If only VW would just make the Golf as funky or well designed as the Civic, or Honda would make the Civic as good to drive and own as the Golf, then we'd be sorted.

I think Honda should keep the Jazz as the simpler, cheaper, clever car and move the Civic up a notch and take the Golf on head to head. A name change would be useful too, to mark the move. Any one who moans that the new car is too expensive or good, can be directed towards the now excellent Jazz (which is more like the successor to Civics of old).

As I haven't driven the old Accord, I don't have this problem!

As I will have FSD's fitted in a few days, I hope not to come to the same conclusion as yours within a few months...:( I have to admit, I'm also having the dampers replaced partly to try to "save" the car from being traded in...

What is the road noise from the rear of the car like in the Tourer?

Usually, estate cars make more noise than the equivalent saloon, except in some Mercs etc.

The car you are looking for is the:
VW scirocco. The only downside is the interior room and the price.
A fully loaded Accord Tourer 2.0 MT or fully loaded C30 Turbo will cost just over £30 000. You don't get a lot of Scirroco for that money...

Fully loaded means sat nav, dead cows etc.

ive replaced my civic t s 2.2 diesel and crv2.2 diesel for a new mil.red accord tourer2.2 d the fun of the civic is gone but the comfort and security feel of the new accord is amazing ive had a 2005 accord 2l.ex but the new is brill

FWH - the road noise from the rear is barely perceptable (at least to my ears). I've driven estates before and they've all had the problem of a noisey back end but not the Accord.

Agreed ;)

On my short test drive the Accord was 'really quiet'. Much better than an A6 Audi :confused:
