Yes. Disconnect the gaiter from the knob by pulling down on the gaiter. It is easier to use a trim tool between the gaiter collar and the knob and lever them apart. All will become clear once you have 'dropped' it.
I got an aftermarket one when I had the 8G and it was also not in the right position when fully tightened. I fixed it by stuffing some paper in and then tightened it so that the gear positions on the Gear Knob were in the right location.
