Hi guys,

last week or so when i change gear it makes a grating noise.

VERY IRRITATING!

I had a quick search on here and couldn't spot as a 'known issue'...

Anyone else know of this?

Grates and sometimes squeaks!

Bloody irritating!!

Is it more noticable when changing down when slowing down / decelerating to come to a stop? If so it's almost certainly the syncro.

'07 CTR's have a known issue with 3rd gear. There was a recall for it but it might be too late to get it done for free now, I dunno. As always, the first thing to try is an oil swap.

The 3rd gear prob shouldn't cause squeaks though. Just a notchyness/crunching.

Yes it is as it happens.

Do i need to replace gear box oil?

Which one shall i go for then?

If it is the Synchromesh, how much will this cost me to fix??

I thought the Type R had some known issues with the gears and Synchromesh?

I feel like crying...

Get it properly diagnosed first, I'm not sure if it can be done in situ on the FN2 or if its a gearbox out job.

I'd start with getting it diagnosed, then contact Honda UK and kick up a fuss as there are known issues, try and get them to take responsibility or offer to pay for part repair.

If no luck there get a dealer quote but also maybe a quote from an independent gearbox specialist or maybe even someone like TDI, CPL, ABP. you might even wanna chuck a LSD in at the same time :) most of the cost is labour.

Problem is, i just got off the phone to Honda.

They ignore the fact that people on Civinfo complain about the same issue. I do not have warranty left on the car and the car has only done 48k, so why should i be potentially paying £750 to rebuild the gearbox??

They call everyone on forums 'fanboys' who do not know what they are talking about. Not nice.

He said 30 people out 10,000 does not warrant a 'known issue' and that Honda keep on top of these things. I then said, what about the cluch issues? Foglight smashing easily?

I will ask Honda to diagnose and go from there. I will look to seek out Honda UK and ask them to look into this.

How many other examples are there on this forum?

I want to collate examples!

Anyone else?

I bought the parts needed from Synchrotech in North America (K20 3rd/4th Carbon Synchro Sleeve Set - Synchrotech Transmissions Inc - That should be the one but check first).

Then had TDI North fit it for about £420. I had LSD and new clutch too but they didn't effect the labour cost.

I'm getting ahead of myself here, as you may have a completely different problem :facepalm:

What gears does this happen? High RPM when shifting fast? Low RPM? All the time? Is it just a noise or is it struggling to go into gear as well?

What about the clutch if it's crunching in more than one then that could be your problem, cheapest option is gearbox oil change, the amsoil and redline mtl is excellent for helping out syncro problems, im using the redline and its brilliant stuff cleared my notchy changes and get rid of the gear knob its too light for smooth changes the skunk2 knob is heavy. With this knob, oil change and a magnetic box plug to attract metal burrs my shifts have been the smoothest I've ever had, before you start forking out big money try the cheapest route by doing the above if no improvement then look at the clutch and box.
You also mention squeak is this when you press the clutch down if so your clutch master cylinder has gone

Shifting fast and all the time now.

Sometimes it struggles to go into gear too so i have to push a bit more.

The grating noise occurs even when car engine is off and i am just working through the gears. The noise is not loud, but can grate or squeak even.

I do have the 3rd gear issue as well...

I am really annoyed over this!! :(

Any advice please?

Hi mate,

Yes it does crunch in more than one.

What steps shall i take then mate?

I just do not want the hassle of paying for a gearbox rebuild... :(

Yes my clutch has squeaked from day one. I am aware of this Master Cylinder Issue. The squeak comes and go's though to be honest. Last time i took it to Honda and they applied some grease somewhere which made the squeak more intermittent.

I had a problem shifting quickly at high RPM in all gears literally a couple of weeks ago. There was excessive amounts of resistance when trying to change and sometimes I was even locked out.

So people at work are all saying it must be the master cylinder unit on the clutch...

What do you reckon mate?

If it is the same problem I had, then your master cylinder will be fine, but rather the pedal needing adjustment so that it utilizes the full stroke of the master cylinder piston.

As culasse says, our master cylinder has a small volume, so every bit of piston travel matters.

OK thanks mate.

I do have an issue with gears so my guy feeling says Master Cyclinder.

Now i need to decide whether or not to go to Honda or somewhere else...

Yours sound's similar to mine, notchy changes especially worse when cold, if I was you change to the redline mtl box oil which is ideal for cold weather and sorts out syncro problems and definitely get a heavy knob
