Hey guys,

Today I thought I'd change my gearbox oil to the Aimsoil oil everyone is raving about. Please note that I have changed gearbox oils before however this is my first time in the FN2.

Anyway I need some clarification. Attached is an image of my gearbox. Circled in red is what I understand is the fill hole, and circled in blue is the drain bolt/hole. Now, as you can see I have removed the bolt from the fill hole. The issue is, that when I did oil came out (and a lot of it)!

Attached is another picture of the oil that came out of the hole. I was under the impression NO oil should come out if this hole as it is the fill hole. Can anyone please clarify this? I did ask Honda to change the gearbox oil for me approximately 8,000kms ago.

Another note - The car was parked for approximately 3 hours before this bolt was removed. I did my engine oil just before doing this.

Did Honda overfill my gearbox? Or is this not the correct bolt? Need to know because it's out now and I can't drive anymore lol

Yes perfectly level. Can also confirm that when I refilled I used just under 2 quarts of oil which from what I've read is the correct amount.

Fill/drain is at the top and side as indicated..items 16 x2
I would assume they filled from the top and didtn take out the side drain plug when doing so ??

The 2.2 Diesel Civic has the same gearbox as the type R? recently changed gearbox oil and could not find the side drain plug. I used 3 litres of MTF-3.

item 20 - drain plug.
item 1 - is a strainer...so might be worth finding out if this is the level too (looks too low IMHO).

I know that's what it is listed as but surely not... it's on the top of the box!

The FN2 side plug looks pretty high to me as well
I always thought gears just dipped a toe in the oil.
Guess they are submerged...

2.2 item 14 drain plug.
There is a bolt above, that bolts into the side/edge of the gearbox casing.
This bolt is the oil level plug.

Ive never changed my oil, bought the car (2.2 diesel) about 3 years ago with 70k and now its done 145k.
Do I need to change the gearbox oil?
Whats this new oil that people are talking about in this thread, why is it better?

If the oil hasnt ever been changed, you should change it asap! I would check all service history. If it were me however, I would still change it. I used Honda MTF-3 from the dealer. You will need 2.2 litres.

Amsoil is supposed to be better for those who have 'notchy' gear shifts.

From factory the gearbox is a little bit overfilled, so that's the reason why some oil came out of the fill-hole. No reason to worry

Can someone clarify where the fill hole is on the FN2 gearbox... looking at the first post, I would assume this is the 'level' hole circled in red and in a sense, the gearbox should be filled until the oil starts to come out of this hole when on level ground.

Question I had really was do I run a pipe from engine bay down to the level hole and fill it that way, or is it like it is on the diesel, with a fill hole on the top of the case underneath where the battery is? Someone did a good How To guide but I'm not sure if it applies to the FN2 gearbox as well.

Going to get mine changed but I've never done the gearbox oil before - nothing that seems difficult mind you so long as I get the fill hole off before the drain hole...

So what’s the deal here...
I'm about to replace my gearbox oil and wanted to check how it's done.
The red circle is the drain hole, you fill from the top/engine bay (another hole presumably) and open blue circle hole to know when at correct level?
That sound right?

I would also like clarification on the fill and drain plug location on the FN2 gearbox. I dont see any need to check oil level hole if you fill with the recommended amount of MTF3 or any gear oil of your preference.

if honda say 1.9 ltr then drain and add 1.9ltr no need to check oil level really as you have just filled with the correct amount. if you have a leaky gearbox then the oil level will be come important.

so can anyone clarify the fill point, and drain point please.
