Grawnching noise when turning on ignition

503 Views 14 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Negativvv
For the last couple of weeks, I've noticed at grawnching sound when turning on the ignition. Doesn't do it every time though.

I put the key in, turn to position II, press the red button, then get maybe a second of the noise. The car then runs normally.

The sound is kind of like the noise you get when not in gear properly.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Sounds like the starter pinion is not withdrawing as soon as the engine starts
Just had a thought, when you put your key in and turn to position II, do you wail for a second or two before pressing the button? I don't.
I sometimes get a whirring sound and car doesn't turn over, second press gets it going straightaway.

That's the starter gear not coming forward to engage with flywheel.

Is that what you are getting or more like what @poor1 says?
Hmmm not sure. It's like a sound of metal scraping. It's similar to on a non push start car, and you hold the ignition key still even after the car has started. Note I don't hold the start button down than more than a second.

It doesn't do it all the time, just concerned a belt or alternator or something isn't about to go.
Mine does this occasionally too. I think @poor1 is correct - it’s just the starter motor pinion sticking.
Mine's done that on occasion...

WIll change it if it fails, the last time I had a starter start to go I slapped it with a mallet and it unstuck itself. Worked thereafter!

The starter isn't attached to anything, I don't think it'll damage anything else.
my 8g would do it from time to time and my 9g does every so often almost sounds like a squelchy squeek sound, almost like an electronic starter motor screech but you only hear it from around the steering wheel, deffo dont feel it

its a civic thing i think
It would be worthwhile to take the starter out and examine the pinion. It may well be that a good clean might rectify the problem.
I should really... Although I can't recall it making that noise for a good few months now. Sometimes starters just free themselves or act erratically!

I've found when it's damp or very cold n wet outside I think.
What engine is it?

I wonder whether there is sufficient access to spray it with WD 40 or similar?

Might have to take the undertray off first
I'd use something better than WD40 as that stuff dries out.

Maybe uncouple the starter, smear some lithium grease and play with it a bit so the grease is all spread out.
