I pick up my first honda civic 1400 on friday 18 jan 2008
its the first honda I have ever bought after years of toyotas.
people might knock toyotas as bland and boring but apart from services I never had to go back to the dealer with a complaint[smilie=tongue.gif].
I have gone for a civic for (1) the looks (2) hondas good name (3) lastest technology.
but after reading the posts at this web I might have made a blunder.
is the new civic a badly built car that ---rattles---trim falls off--and is always going back to the dealer ( who do not care ) :?: or should I have stayed in the safe haven of toyota.
have I got a good car coming on friday.

Firstly - Welcome!!!

I must admit that, overall, I feel let down by the build quality of the Civic. The engine - as far as I know - is rock solid. It's just a shame about the paint quality, rear suspension, interior rattles, easy-scratch dash and the 'technology' that's better on paper than it is in reality..... and the thing that really pisses me off is my average mpg not getting past the high 30s - considerably lower than what Honda advertised!!!
I haven't heard of any trim falling off though!!!

I've owned my Civic for almost a year now. Loved it for the first month, then hated it - until a couple of months ago when, for some reason, I've started loving it again.
Getting it serviced in the next couple of weeks (interesting to see if my mpg improves) and then off to Celtic Tuning!!!

I've not been back to the dealer since I picked mine up in March.

There are a few areas that could have been better designed though :

I have had no problems at all with my Civic and think its a great car.

I've got a few stone chips on the front, but the way I see it - its a car and its bound to get chips just like all of my other cars.

I don't think you will be disappionted - quite the opposite actually

Yes - certainly not all that well built

that ---rattles---
Yes - in several areas

trim falls off--
By and large, no - rattles a bit - but other than cigar lighter doesn't come off

and is always going back to the dealer
Yes - regularly - in my case for relaitively minor troubles

( who do not care )
By and large - no, though obviously there is variation - mine are caring

:?: or should I have stayed in the safe haven of toyota.
Probably - if a safe haven was what you wanted

have I got a good car coming on friday.
Probably a mixed one of which you will enjoy some aspects - and of which you will hate other aspects.

Forums often tend to attract people with some kind of problems (like me and my old Citroen) - you cannot make a overall judgement of the civic based on the moaning and groaning sometimes found in this forum.
And - if you have bad luck and get problems you will find plenty of help here.

I think most people only post on here when they have a problem, I have had my civic for 6 months now and cannot fault it, I have only had one small problem with a rip in the door seal caused by the door freezing to it in very cold weather. (fixed under warranty by a brilliant dealer).
I have no rattles, no scratches on the dash ,two very small stone chips on the bonnet which I am sure you would get on most cars. The build quality on mine is excellent.

I'm sure you will get a good reliable car, remember for all the civics there are on the roads it is a very very small proportion of them that are on this site.

As for dealers there are good and bad with all makes of car just buy from one with a good reputation.
I'm sure you will be driving your Civic with a huge grin on your face just like the majority of us

My car is absolutely fantastic, I love it and would NEVER buy anything else.
Nothing has dropped off
It doesnt rattle
MPG is OK ( Manufacturers figure are always optimistic)
Its only been back to the dealer once because they broke a part fitting the rear parking sensors
Stop worrying
You will enjoy it!!

I'm afraid I disagree with comments about people only joining and posting on these forums when they have problems.

Every car-based forum I have been on, I have joined purely joined initially to get as much information about my car as possible (eventually some off-topic chat ensues as well!). For example, if it weren't for this forum, I would have ordered the Honda iPod connection - obviously glad I didn't!!!

There are always a balance of people who hate there car as well as those who love it - I'm kinda in the middle I think!
(And there are also those who think they're above anyone who own cars different to their own!!)

I can't fault the Civ's engine, it's greta all round, but some of the trim QUALITY is a bit naff, but, on the whole my dealers have been attentive to my needs, you'll enjoy it honestly.

Me and Millie will NOT be separated.

Coming up for two years ownership now and I wouldn't change it for the world (Maybe an Audi R8, ......but even then!!!!!)

Fuel usage is as expected.
Performance is far, far better than expected
Road holding superb.
Styling, still rave over it.
......as do most others.
Nothing has fallen off.
Not a single rattle.
......do miss a rear wiper tho'!

You're gonna love it!

My father raped me when I was 10.
I got 6 relatively good years tho'!"

Yes. :)

I have gone for a civic for (1) the looks (2) hondas good name (3) lastest technology.
I think that is the same as most of us.

but after reading the posts at this web I might have made a blunder.

You most probably have a good car coming.

Several members have had no major issues.
Some have.
I think you will find that with most cars nowadays.
There are even some Toyotas with problems, even though Toyota are probably one of the best quality brands out there.

The Civics being built now do seem better than the earliest ones.

Have a look at the satisfaction survey:
http://www.civinfo.com/forum/survey.php?do=results&sid=28

I read a lot on this site (problems etc) and ordered anyway - because this is a great car!

I am sure you will enjoy it.

Hello philviv!

Welcome to the forum.
Don't worry!
The spaceship is a fantastic car. (for most of us)
No trim falls off, not poorer paint quality than any other modern car, imo.
You'll love it. [smilie=cheeky-grin:
Congratz!

After 2 years I still love the car even though I have had a couple of problems, but these have always been fixed promptly by the dealer.

As for someone saying they only get mid 30's MPG from the diesel, I am very surprised. I normally get 39 MPG from my 1.8 and that's the real figure, not what the trip computer says.

hi there,
ive had my car now nearly 4 months and overall im happy with the car. love driving it but lately struggling to get over 32mpg, its a petrol 1.8 in milano red, 5 door. dont know why the mpg is low realy as in the first couple of months was getting 38/39. yeahj not much difference i know but as petrol prices keep going up i want to get as many miles as pos. has anyone else notice that?
i want to get a spoiler for it and eventually want to have the footwell lighting too. wheres the cheapest place to get these as i would love to do it myself but dont wana mess up my car as i would be gutted.

thanks

I, like yourself had previously owned a Toyota. We had it 9 years and it never had a single problem and was an excellent car. So obviously the new Civic has alot to live up to in the reliability stakes. But reliability is not the be all and end all of a car. You see, the Toyota was a CDX (top spec.) and a very pleasant car to drive. Nice and comfy and all that, but a bit bland. Even when new, it never really made me feel that I wanted to get in it and drive (Hate driving anyway). Whereas the Civic is an inspiring car that makes you feel good. Not only that but I can't wait to get behind the wheel and drive. I'm sure (like myself) that your switch from Toyota to Honda will be a smooth transition that you will not regret. Remember that all new models suffer with initial problems no matter who manufactures them. I've a friend at work who bought a brand new mini which so far has had to have no less than 3 new gear boxes and another friend that bought a brand new ford focus when they were 1st out and had to have all the suspension units replaced. If your Civic is a 2008 model then I'm fairly sure most of the faults mentioned here on this forum will have been sorted out. Can't comment too much about the Civic reliability yet as we have only done 400 miles in it so far. Enjoy your new car.

:D

Had my beauty since May and it`s wonderful in every respect including making driving fun again.
Trouble is you tend to hear the complaints but not the many many happy and satisfied owners.
Take delivery and MAKE YOUR OWN MIND UP, for me and many thousands of others it`s wonderful car and hopefully so will it be for you.
Good luck and enjoy it :D:D:D:D:D

Hi philviv

Welcome to the forum.

If my experience is to go by you will be delighted. This is the best car I have ever owned and after 13 months ownership have had no issues. Love driving it and the looks are great. I am more obsessed than I was when it was brand new. With my new found knowledge (mostly through this great site - thanks Pottsy) I think the car looks better than it did when fresh out of the showroom. Driving mostly round town my average for the last 8000 miles is 38.6mpg and on a run usually get about 43/44mpg which I am very happy with for petrol engine and this is not just cruising for economy. I drive how I feel at the time and always have climate control on auto.
I am sure you will be delighted.
