I recall a few years ago when I was using a MK4 Golf TD. On my way to work I would regularly stop at a set of traffic lights about 10 minutes/ two miles from my home and steam would start to rise from the front of the car, occasioned by the thermostat opening and allowing hot water through the cold radiator, causing moisture on the outside of the radiator to vaporise. That is how long it took for the coolant to start circulating which is no wonder that diesels don't get hot quickly inside the car. With my wife's petrol Toyota there is hot air blowing easily within a quarter of the distance described above.
