Ive never owned a Civic before.

Im looking at either a 2.2 Diesel or a petrol unsure on size.

I travel around 10k miles a year

The one thing with the diesel is the issue to do with the clutch. I will be looking to buy a 2009 model with fairly low milage around the 8.5 - 10k mark.

Any advice would be great, im no car boffin, so no complicated acronyms please.

Theres the 1.4 Petrol, 1.8 Petrol, 2.2 Derv, 2.0 Type R

Looking for 3 or 5 door?

I have a 1.4 but if i was to have to choose out of a 1.8 or 2.2 id choose the 2.2 as im a big fan of derv torque and the better fuel economy :)

You really need to tell us exactly what you expect from....
performance
economy
handling
faults
upgrades

what milage you do per day and per year.
do you poodle along or burn about.
town country or motorway.
etc..

and yes diesel has clutch issues.
type r has synchro issues.

No problems with mine touch wood.. get the derv mate you won't be sorry just a big smile when you put your foot down....:vroam:

Performance, id like something when I put my foot down it pulls. Never had an overly powerful car, all fairly low 1.1 - 1.5 petrols.

Handling id like it to stick to the roads, im an advanced pursuit driver and rather then braking before going into corners I like to use the power of the engine to drive through them

Faults - id like as less as possible. LOL

to and from work is probables around 55 miles. but I car share which is also a factor, there needs to be enough space for someone in the back and im 6ft 6" tall. So i like my comfort.

the car I drive now is a suzuki swift LOL and this has terrible road noise no matter what road im on!

When you say poodle about. no I like to get from point A to point B as quickly as possible, but safely ofc. I also like some comfort.

Less than 10K a year - get the 1.8 petrol - the diesel isn't very economical over short journeys

thing is short journeys dont exist where I am , im looking at around 30 miles or so to see fam and friends.

I share cars hence why mileage isnt always so high but this may change to 13-15k in the next 6 months or so.

test drive both at the dealers and try to get a half run in each, reset the mpg etc and drive the same route, if you dont need the rear seats why not look at a CRZ? We had one a lot quicker than people think, they are light handle great and are very cheap to run (can easily get late 50s mpg on open road cruise control 55mph in eco)

1.8 is a high revving petrol 6700rpm..you need to be high in the revs to get the power and take it to the redline (limited power upgrades).
2.2 Is a low revving diesel 4500rpm but also appreciates being worked hard.
This has lots of power at low rpm but dies off above 3500rpm.
But remaps are an option around the 300lbft and 200bhp mark for about £150 if you are adventurous.

The high torque on the diesel induces understeer very easy trying to accelerate through corners. Theres a rear brace that can help with this to some degree.
So really working the corners hard the 1.8 is much lighter and will suffer less oversteer.

I think the 1.8 has the least faults vs the 2.2 but its mainly down to the clutch issues. An upgrade is available but its not nice to pull off in.

This is completely diesel territory...especially if you intend to make progress. Comfort is not something you are likely to get too much of. FN2 is bar jarringly stiff to some. 1.8 and 2.2 are skittish when braking over bumps due to the rigidity. Both can be treated to Koni FSD shock+ eibach progressive springs or a number of coilover kits. This lose the crashiness but the ride is still firm. You need a test drive in a 1.8 type S.

Tyres are 225 wide on this ....and tyre choice makes a massive difference to road noise. And if noise is really important the 1.8 will be much quieter than the 2.2.

Well you sound as if road handling is much more important than power.
And if you dont intend to remap the diesel....the petrol is no slouch and quicker than the 2.2 at 100mph+ where its legal. It is also very very economical compared to many cars and sometimes on a par with the diesel.
Its the lightest and least issues...so I would say go with this...even though the diesel would be more economical for you.
A 2009 or newer type S GT will come with many extras to play with.

NB the brake suck in all models....you will replace the pads/disks and fit braided lines race fluid out of necessity.
Big brake kits are an option too.
