Hi

I'm really sorry if this has been talked about over and over before but i could really do with some help deciding on my next new vehicle.
I currently drive an Astra (company car) but looking to get my own vehicle and have decided on a Civic from all the good (some bad) reviews that i have read on it.

I've narrowed it down to two options.

the 1.6 diesel or the 2.2 diesel.

I generally would do about 12,000 miles a year. With 8-10,000 of those being on the motorway.
I was worried that the 1.6 would be slightly underpowered to cope with the regular motorway journeys which is why the 2.2 comes into play.

But im aware that the 1.6 does a lot better for MPG and i was also thinking of getting both of them ECU remapped by CelticTuning possibly. Would that help the power and economy of the 1.6 as i was leaning more towards it over the 1.6 if the remapping would help?

Also, both vehicles meet Euro 5 emissions standard but fall within the limits for London charge so they would not be charged the ULEZ charge coming into the future.

Does it matter that they dont meet the Euro 6 standard or would i be better off looking for a new vehicle that does meet that standard as i was looking at between a 13 plate up to a 65/66 plate.

Would really appreciate any advice you guys could give?

2.2 is what i would go for, tbh i dont think there is really that much in it regarding the mpg figures and the extra power/torque it has would do it for me everytime.

Do you think it would be an issue that it's not Euro 6 moving into the future?

I checked my facelift March 2015 which is Euro 5 and it definitely doesnt meet the NOX requirement for the ULEZ and the TFL website confirms this

So I'm somewhat surprised you say a EU5 car meets the ULEZ limits

Mine is a tourer, perhaps the emissions are much worse than a hatch ??

Have you checked the TFL site for confirmation ?

No idea, you couldn't pay me real money to go to that London place so I've not been keeping abreast of their pay to pollute schemes

I drive an ep3 into London, well, as far as Hammersmith / Fulham then tube it :laugh2:

I’ve had both 2.2 and 1.6
If you are at all concerned about future value or city emission charges go 1.6
The 1.6 is absolutely fine on the motorway and handles slightly better due to an engine that weighs about 70kg less
All the 1.6 lacks is that raw grunt for overtakes without a down change.
1.6s seem less prone to cam chain rattle
2.2 would do 60mpg on average the 1.6 does just over
A 2.2 will need a clutch every 70k (all of mine had at least one)
All of that said I really miss the 2.2 it was so satisfying to use the acceleration

1.6d is very impressive - fully loaded up family, dog, luggage, roof box never felt underpowered.

I had this exact choice to make a few months back and for me the newer engine wins hands down. Done 6k miles now in my 1.6 and it's very good, no regrets.

London? Why on earth would you want to go there!? Horrible stinky, crowded, expensive etc. If you must, then why drive? Train surely better option vs. traffic pain and parking cost?

Tried a few number plates I found on autotrader. As far as I can tell, 1.6 i-DTEC registered after Sep 2015 are not affected by ULEZ. Cars registered prior to that are affected.

Couldn't figure out why, and happy to be proven wrong :)

As a rough guide TfL have said diesels over 4 years old, unless updated, are likely to be hit with with the LEZ charge from April.
