Hi

I own a Honda Civic Diesel iCTDI 2.2 2006 which randomly goes into limp mode.

This generally happens after driving for a while and coming to a stop at a junction . Or it can happen after a long journey and a short stop off. It's totally random and intermittent.

The only way to cure the limp mode is to either turn off the engine. Re-start the car and rev into the red which blasts out a whole load of black smoke and the car then drives great until the next time. It can also run ok if left for a day or 2 after limp mode. So confusing????

No fault light comes on unless you continously rev the engine like crazy into the red, then the Check Engine light (may/may not) come on.

The issue has been looked at by Honda Dealership and random garages who can read Honda error codes and under warranty has had 4 x new injectors installed, a new fuel filter and diesel fuel injector cleaner added to a full tank.

Other garages have said it requires a good long journey which I've done and again it runs great but then there's the random limp mode occasionally?????

I always use premium diesel including Shell vPower as I was advised that poor fuel can contribute.

Can anyone help or advise as it's driving me mad!!!

Many Thanks in advance.

Welcome to :civinfo:

Sorry to hear that you are having issues, how many miles has the car covered? Does it do lots of short journeys, <10 miles? Do you mostly pootle around? Does it have genuine Honda air and fuel flters? Has the EGR been cleaned recently? - it's quite a straight forward job.

Good luck getting to the bottom of the issue.

Hi. Thanks for the reply. Yes it does a lot of small journeys but at least once a week I try and do a longish journey of about 60-100 miles. The car had done 87,000 miles

Yes it has genuine Honda Air and Fuel filters. Not sure about the EGR being cleaned? Is this part of a standard service or Honda Dealership Fault Diagnosis?

Good, Honda's like OEM filters. Short trips are bad for diesels, they need to be rev'd occasionally too (which you do periodically = good).

EGR's are often neglected, I don't know if they are included in an OEM services.

I recently had a smoke issue and learnt that EGR valves and MAF sensors can start to fail without throwing any error codes. The Honda diag system can either be used 'dumb' by looking at what the ECU tells you is wrong (zip in your case) or someone with experience can interpret how components interact and then determine what is wrong.

Fahad at http://premiertuning.com/ is nearby for you and I suggest it would be worth a trip over for a diagnosis health check. He interpreted my HDS output and fixed my issue without playing the expensive game of 'parts darts' :)

Many thanks for your advise Farqui. Much appreciated. I'll give premiertuning a call. Was your car having similar issues to mine then?

No, my car never went into limp mode. It didn't throw any error codes tho.

As several garages have already tried to figure out the problem, I think Fahad will be your best bet. I've always found him very helpful and he has plenty of experience with these engines. For <£50 he'll run his diag s/ware and hopefully will at least give you some pointers, if not a fix.

I've read elsewhere that it may be a Turbo issue with "the variable vanes and actuator on the TURBO becoming sticky and clogged as well as a combination of carbon build up in the egr valve"

Is the turbo diesel/egr valve cleaning fluid you can add to a diesel tank any good or worth buying anyone?

I also forgot to mention, the car also goes into limp mode when carrying a heavy load. I recently picked up several bags of concrete with 3 x family members and the car went into limp mode then.

Guessing is fun, but not reliable!

Get yourself a cheap code reader and find out what stored code(s) are being registered. Then you will KNOW what's wrong.

If it was tested by Honda, then the Honda diagnostic system would have run EGR tests, that is one of the primary diagnostic tests.

For heavens sake, find out what the stored code is. I can't believe I'm the only one suggesting this! It is the obvious place to start.

The issue is that codes are not always produced and when they are they are acted on but the issue persists. Hence me asking for advice!

But codes are being generated on some occasions! You need to find out what they are and tell us. It could be many so things that are causing your problem and we've probably heard them all before. As Farqui already said, you want to avoid playing 'parts darts'

It sounds as though the previous work was done by guesswork... Its very unlikely that ALL the injectors needed replacement and why would someone then put injector cleaning additive into the tank?

I agree that Fahad is a very knowledgeable guy, but bear in mind that his primary business is selling remaps. I would strongly advise against having a remap until the fault condition is properly fixed. But his remaps are highly rated.

I was recommended Forte Diesel Turbo Cleaner (supposed to clean sticking Turbo and EGR valves) which I added to half a tank of diesel then drove car solidly on motorway at 3000 rpms for approx 30 mins 2-3 days in a row. Random Limp Mode seems to have stopped and hesitation in acceleration is improving, especially in lower gears. Still monitoring but a definite improvement.

Issues started up again

Hi. The above issues have started again. I've forgotten the code produced but the issue is with a turbo over boost. Taken to turbo specialist who stated nothing is wrong with the turbo. They cleaned the egr valve and the car drove great until I took it on a long journey with a heavy load. About 1 hour into the journey the usual accerlation hesitation started again with black smoke on high revs. I hear that turbo over boost can be an issue with the maf and/or map sensors or even a clogged air filter. Apparently engine codes are not always generated for these issues. Any ideas?
