Hey everyone ,

so i have just bought my type r recently (2 weeks ago) and am loving it...

My insurance however seems to be taken the p*ss outa me at 1231.56 :(

im 23 soon to be 24 and have four years no claims discount. I am currently insured with quinn direct.

I am based in Northern Ireland and that quote is the cheapest i could find :(

I done a search on the forum and even found out that there is a guy @ 21 who gets cheaper insurance than me haha :D

You fellas on the mainland sure do seem to get good deals , some of you even complain @ around the £700 mark , wish i could get mine down to that :p

anyways , i was wondering if any of you good lads on here could tell me some secrets of where i could find a better deal? ive tried adrian flux who only quote for the mainland , direct line quoting me £2000 odds , admiral and the like are all the same. The next best quote i have got to the one i currently have was with endsleah? of£1500 odds.

Your advice would be great.

thanks

Michael

it depends on your area.. it affects your premium alot. Without trying to be ignorant does anyone know if Ireland is more of a rating for insurance than the mainland??

Mate, i'm also from NI

Try www.greenlightinsurance.com they are bound to beat that. i'm 21, 2 NCB, 3 years licence, £1600; so your bound to get a fair whack off that!

They only insure performance cars, hot hatches, modifiieds etc and they take that into account (mines is standard by the way)

£1200 isn't bad - mines £1175 for a 2.2 at 21 (20 at the time) with 3 years ncb :(

I'm in Bangor, £670 fully comp. with directline. The next closest for me was someone at £920. The car is standard - no mods. 4 years NCD, 28 years old & no points on licence (yet!)

Run your details past a few brokers and see what you can get.

Remember area, garage and occupation all make a difference to the premium, and you could pay a higher excess to bring the policy price down.

Hey, i'm 22 with 2 years no claims and have the type R 1 and half years now, i first paid £1300 with Elephant.co.uk and at renewal got a quote with Bell for £900, elephant went on to match the Bell quote so i am still with them but its definitely worth looking other than on comparison sites, i found them more expensive.

I work with an insurance company and they do not quote for NI mainly because their underwriters do not cover those post codes. I'd say go directly to the underwriters (Norwich Union, Zurich, Royal Sun Alliance, Allianz) as they may have a Northern Ireland specific department. Some of the convictions codes etc are different for NI so they often have a different set of rates that a specific department is more likely to deal with. I think your best bet is to ring up and ask. I'll check with my client to see if they have a specialist NI department as it's useful to know.

Hi mate,

I was with Endsleigh (underwritten by Zurich) and they wanted £1200 off me for my R. I moved to the AA and got it for £683. Funny thing is it's still underwritten by Zurich!! Work that one out .

Post back how you get on so that others can see what happens! And good luck! :)

update.

green light have got back to me and are quoting : £972.70 with £500 excess.

What do we think ? Its the best so far.

thats a saving of £258.30 on my current insurance.

Obviously i am glad that i have got this price, not sure if i will get better although i am trying :p

I would give Bell a try - they were by far the cheapest for me. I was 28 with 3 years NCD and 0 points and I think I paid about £600.

If you're thinking of doing some modifications though I would leave Bell alone as they don't insure mods, even though they charge you a premium for having them...

£500 seems quite a high excess but then as you have already said it's probably your age (most companies have a young drivers additional excess).

I actually used tesco compare I believe!!

Compare car insurance, Home insurance, Credit Cards, Loans and more | Tesco Compare

Once you have your best possible quote, ring them up and see what else they can knock off. I used to just stay with the same company year after year for convenience but after buying my R I realised a bit of shopping around was neccesary.
