1.6 turbo eh....

Isn't there some rule in WTCC, that the racing car must be based on a similar road car, i.e. the BMW touring car was based on the road going 320 SE?

In current WTCC and WRC regulations even though they are called Super 2000 the engine must be 4-cyl 1.6T with direct injection built to a set of FIA-mandated dimensions in key areas - either from scratch, or (if one exists in the manufacturers range) based on an existing production engine built/modified to the same dimensions. There is no requirement for it to derive from an existing production engine (see publicly available extract from FIA regulations below)

Art. 10 - The championship is now reserved for Super 2000 cars powered by 1.6-litre turbo engines. Old S2000 (2.0L normally aspirated) and S2000D (2.0L turbo diesel) may also be allowed to participate on condition that they are entirely in conformity with the technical regulations. Other cars complying with the technical regulations of national championships may be accepted by the Touring Car Committee, but cannot score points.

and then the quote from Ito-san the Honda CEO:

Honda CEO Takanobu Ito explained: “We took the decision to enter in the WTCC with the European Civic. We will develop a totally new engine for this project and we are all excited about starting this new challenge.” For this project, Honda formed a joint partnership with Mugen and J.A.S. Motorsport. Mugen will manufacture a 1.6-litre turbo bespoke racing engine developed by Honda R&D.

So, Mugen, JAS and Honda are developing a 1.6t engine to compete in the WTCC as per their regs. Considering the huge cost implications of designing a new engine, and Honda's very small engine range currently available, I take it we will see a derivative of this sometime soon...

Quite interested in the HR412E, as given the recent announcement it looks like it will become the base for the new Type R engine. Found some details about it online but not much.

Exciting times ahead :)
