Hi All,

Hopefully I am posting this in the right place, if not sorry.

I currently have a 2011 BMW 116d se, I've had it for about 18 months. So I have an itch to change to something different with more power.

My driving is split between A/B roads and motorway, A/B roads on the way into work. Then most times I take a longer motorway route on the way home.

In the past 18 months I have covered about 21,000 miles.

Torn between:

Sensible - 2012 2.2 diesel
Used Honda 2012 Civic 2.2 i-DTEC ES 5-Door HFT Camera at Honda Belfast - Donnelly Group, Northern Ireland_

Not so sensible - 2010 Type R
Used Honda Civic Type R 2.0 i-VTEC GT 3-Door at M1 Motorstore Dungannon - Donnelly Group, Northern Ireland_

My insurance for the type R goes up about £200 and for the diesel it only goes up £15.

Brain says diesel, but still crave madness of the type r.

Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated. :)

If you can afford it, go for the R, keep it a year and sell on and you have at least tried it . on motorways etc high 30s are no issues and their are less issues than the diesels IMO.

Comes down to finances

Type R definitely if the insurance works for you.
It's a very special car I must say and it makes you smile both from the inside and outside.
Quite good aftermarket support as well.
Be sure to get a mint one. They are driven hard so bushings, clutch etc might be worn out.

Clutchs are usually dead on in Type R due to the flat torque line and relatively low amount of engine torque produced

If you can afford the fuel Toss a coin.
Both have good and bad points with mixed driving like that.

If you sway on the economy and high mileage side...diesel.
If its a more involved drive experience, road holding and such around the twisties...fn2

Driving technique and normal tear and wear.
Dont overlook the clutch. It is a large expense.

If it helps... I get 340 miles from brimmed to fumes in my type r... Thats £70 of shell premium fuel. I only do 800 miles a month tho... not 1,200...

Thanks for all the replies guys!

It's a tough decision, on the one hand I an used to not having to shell out a lot. But on the other hand I love playing about on twisty roads! One of the main reasons I went for a rear wheel drive, to kick the back end out a bit. :)

Gaz with my 116d I'm getting about 400 from a £60 fill. Not going to the fumes though, but that is close to the diesel! [smilie=thumbup.gif]

I like Stoney's idea of keeping it for a year and trying it out. Then selling on, it shouldn't drop to much value in a year.

Thanks for the heads up on the clutch, I will have to get down to see the Type R next week. Will take it out for a spin. Even though the dealers are part of the same group, for them to bring the car to the dealer that has the diesel they have to buy it from the other dealer!

I took the diesel out for a test drive and it was very smooth, I noticed you could actually hear the turbo from the engine. Not used to that in the 1 series. I like it :cool:

Will hopefully get looking at the Type R on Monday, will do some sum and keep going through the info on the 8th and 9th gens on the forum.

AND - it's still going strong with the present owner.
+ you will have the torque for not having to change down all the time.

Obivously I was referring to the Type R when I was talking about the clutch.
And it's not a "problem". It's wear and tear, a reality on any car that has a few years on its neck, just like changing the timing belt for example but luckily Honda uses chain (Doesn't mean it can't jump out a notch though).

The latest type R is not new anymore and the clutch will often be worn out because it's a performance car that is driven hard.

When I looked around for a EP3, three out of four had worn out clutches.
I would ask if the clutch have been changed and if it hasn't it would be a good argument to bargain with the seller if you feel it's on the way out.
Dip the clutch when the engine is idling. There shouldn't be any change in the sound character of the engine but if it does then it's on the way out and I would try to bargain and walk away if the seller won't budge on the price.
It will be 10% of the whole cars value to change it. It's also normal that bushes need to be replaced so I would testdrive it "hard" if I were you to get a feel how it's holding up.

Oh and one more note.

The diesel ain't close to the Type R in "feel" as stock so don't buy it if you wanted a performance car that is real fun to drive.

I have read of 2.2 diesel clutch issues, never a type R!, I had an EP3 type r from new for 72K miles and have had my FN2 R from new for over 62K miles so far, the petrol has so little torque that its easy on the clutch!

Even so its on the Honda Happiness fixed price or better thing! Each cars wear will be down to the driver though!

With your mileage Diesel will not be that prudent but may still work out cheaper due to the lower depreciation of buying 2nd hand!

agree with what stoney says about a years trial with an R, but on the other hand i think you'll loose a stack of cash trying to sell it on pal. as seen on this forum, the type r really does not hold any value and are going for peanuts. as much as it pains me to say, id go for the other option bud.

Well, I went for the sensible option in the end.... :)

Thanks Pigdog, yea the thought of losing a load of money on it just for a year put me off.

A few things on the 9G I preferred over the older model as well.

Picking her up on Friday. :D

Anyone any suggestions for extras and accessories I should get for it? Or stay away from?

As a trial and to not lose money why not buy a 3k ep3 and run it for 6 months? If you get a good one i dont think you would lose money?

The thing that would worry me about dropping down a few years is something major going wrong. It's unlikely, but always a possibility.
