Are there any special tools required for this job regarding the removal and replacement of the front nearside wheel bearing on my 2006 2.2 ctdi SE.
Is it relatively straight forward?
Do I need to be aware of any common issues related to this task?

It will probably be a press fit and the hub nut will be under high torque.
If you havent got heavy duty tools and press... dont even think about it ;)

It will be doable with puller, lots of swearing abuse and blood though.

Yeah.... I have done a couple before and to be honest... Id rather pay the greasemonkeys to do that kind of job especially without all the tools.
Rusted bolts and that kind of thing would add to the fun 10 fold.
