I've been getting a few quotes as my renewal is due 4/6/13. I have a couple of mods. Spi vision on front grill & rear lights, Vinyl wrapped roof, tints and parking sensors. I'm getting turned away from loads of companies for the spi vision and they aren't able to classify the roof wrap. The tesco operator was very good and knew about mods. He spoke to the underwriters and they have been able to classify it somehow as they have a new mod list to use from tomorrow. I said I was planning a new HU and they said it was fine. I then said I am thinking of fitting a type S spoiler soon. They added that and it came up on the system to refuse cover. They will no longer insure cars with aftermarket spoilers, unless you are already covered. New customers will be refused. Zurich said the same. It seems they are really cracking down.

I wouldn't bother declaring those mods tbh mate. They are stickers all be it big ones! Spoiler is an OEM part so it came with the car yeah!???

That's my argument. Problem is its all well and good not declaring, but it then takes one lapse of concentration and the insurance co will do anything to get out of paying out. Looks like I will have to either forget the spoiler or try Flux. I've requested a callback from Sky Insurance so will see what they have. Might check with Admiral re a spoiler and if they are ok I might stay with them.

I don't understand why non-performance mods warrant a premium !

Try some of the specific mod insurance companies, they know what they're talking about.

Details are on here, somewhere.

I'm sure someone one here had an increase in premium just for fitting a sports grill !

even if you drive through a group of school children no ones going to void your insurance for having a oem wing on the car and that's if they notice in the first place .

I agree, I only ever planned subtle mods just to keep the car close to OEM, wasn't expecting to be refused cover as a result. I just filled out the Chris knott details needed for their email quote so will have to see what they can do. As soon as you add a spoiler on to the comparison sites the number of quotes drops to about 13 and most are random companies I have never heard of.

Thanks mate, aren't green light part of Adrian Flux? I'm sure I was with them with a modded Clio a few years back.

The car will only be inspected after a crash. unless its undrivable you will be able to take the bits off you want. Simples!

This argument has been on here lots of times, photos are sometimes taken at the scene. Any undeclared mods could void your insurance for your claim but insurer would still pay to third party.
Not as simple as just ripping something off after the event.
Personally, I would simply not ake the risk, as said anything to get out of paying is the norm, don't give them an excuse.
Some insurers monitor sites like civinfo to gather intelligence but it would seem some simply do not understand mods and the implications or effect, best to go to a specialist who fully understands.

A fair point but are you telling us that you have declared all the little mods on your sig. Like Gers decals etc. ?

Nope as they are not functional mods, a decal is not a mod. Below is a definition from an insurer

Modification- Vehicle modifications are alterations made to the manufacturer's standard body, engine, suspension or wheels of your car which may affect its performance, value, safety or appearance.

Why does that give me the feeling theyre just trying to make it look like a competitive market to avoid excessive scrutiny?

They could argue that stickers are a mod to a manufacturers standard body :worms:

In fairness, my insurance company deserve their premium if they could tell the difference between a type S/type R spoiler as i can hardly tell myself after owning a type R for 3 years!

Sounds like decals to me. Where do you draw the line? How about a vinyl wrap? That's just a big sticker... :worms:

Even decals are clased as a mod to a lot of companies as in some cases it makes the car more appealing to thieves, so say!!!

I delcared all my mods to Flux with no issues, power mods, suspension, brakes and bodywork...
