There is an explicit specification for number plates so that everyone is clear about what is required. There cannot be flexibility because that would allow all sorts of legal loopholes.

And... suppose everyone was cool about tailored plates; you have an accident, the other person drives off, you attempt to jot down the plate details, but the plate is *so* tailored you couldn't actually read it. What then?

It is the same with speed limits (which can be a pain in the arse I know) the designated limit *is* the limit.

Gotta have rules guys...

Anthony.

Then why do the DVLA charge more than the Std price for plates that only make sense if the rules are 'bent' slightly. For example W4LNE (not that I am bitter!!!) when to auction. Talk about double standards.

They do it because they know people will pay for them. As you know, the plate you mention would not be exempt from the rules governing how to display that number. It would be sold on the understanding it would be displayed W4 LNE. It is purely a money making scheme.

Got to be close to entrapment though...

Fair comment about the ANPR but i still think with the technology we have these days and with a plate like the one we are talking about, it would easily recognise it. oh well im sure we've all broken some rules now and then.

Now as some of you seem to know alot about private plates :p just say i buy a plate that is:

' N3 EXM ' is it "legal" to put it on my plate as ' N 3 E X M ' with the same spacing between each character, just asking so don't shoot please :p.

Here is my private plate (I aksed for it to be totally LEGAL), it's on my old car, my Civ has a different plate, this will be going on my Escort Van ;):

I HATE numberplates that are misrepresented, by italicising, bolding, colouring etc. etc. etc., because if someone gets hurt and they drive off, you can't write down the plate, what happens then! If you've got a decent numberplate, then why do you need to alter it illegally? It still says what you want, so what does it matter??

Tom

BTW, beore anyone gets on my case, the image was on my old phone so everything looks a bit out ;-) Not bad for 250 quid though :)

Well I'm about to buy "S29 AWS" - and get a plate printed as "S 29 AWS", but this will be legal size and legal standard lettering - If the police want to try and fine me £1,000 for putting the space in - I will honestly tell them to grow up there and then!

I think that's acceptable - they might frown upon it though... At the end of the day - you can read it still - maybe even clearer as it has the spaces! lol

I think the illegal actions are like these examples:
-Any font other than the standard and standard 3D version
-Turning characters round
-Making characters smaller
-Using the screw covers to join up characters and make other letters/numbers

Remember that if you are involved in an accident you will be held reponsible as your vehicle should not have been on the road with illegal plates. You may also find your insurance company will not pay for any damage to your car!

someone i know at work has just received a 1000 fine for defacing his number plate. The police did a 2 week hit on all people with dodgy number plates.
I say top marks to the Police on that. The illegal spacing and changing of letters and numbers on registration plates has got totally out of control.
Let's have a nationwide blitz on the practice,,,,,,,,rant over!!!!!

unfortunately, if you tell them to grow up, you may well end repeating the same phrase to the judge...

At the end of the day, the specs are there, in black and white.
The gaps aren't "at least", they are exact.

And whilst I might well agree with your comments about making the plate easier to read, unfortunately that doesn't make them any more legal :(

The plates that really get my goat are those where the owner has a
'normal' plate such as CF06 ABC, but has had it made up as CF06 ABC (that' in Comic font, which was the closet I could get to the stupidly thin and lent over type font in use)
Kinda pointless, and VERY difficult to read (although maybe that is the point...)

How do things stand if someone has a short personalised registration and they have shortened the actual plate?
I see so many Porsche Cayennes driving around with 3 character registrations and the number plate halved in size to suit, is this still legal if all the lettering dimensions are correct?

I don't really know, but if the lettering spacing, border spacing and font is legal, I can't see why not.

As far as I understand the law, YES, it is illegal, as it does not conform to any stadard sizing (there are three current legal styles I believe, that for rovers/jags, that for short squat plates and that of normal sized plates, anything else I believe is illegal).

ATB,
Tom

Much of this 'tailored numbers' twaddle would be kicked into touch, if the people maufacturering/making up the plates were prosecuted as well as the people displaying them on their vehicles.

Anthony.

(yes, I am a grumpy old man.)

They supply these plates as "show plates" though.

Obviously they know they are going to be used on the road, but it means they aren't liable for supplying them for that purpose.

I'm Gonna enjoy this.........

I'm the Owner of CIIVYK and am replying on behalf of my wife who drives the car more than I do.
robbo51 - Lets see who places the note first me or you LOL. I know you park in the school carkpark. I figure that you took the pic on 'Review day.' Weren't you observant enough to notice the civinfo sticker on my back screen? Why do you suggest that they give 'the guy a break' when it was you who started quoting the law!!!
sambuca2907 - Do you think I'd be stupid enough to drive a Ford Escort with this reg number - I think not. Why is this weird?? Could you explain how I bought the plate in order to deface it - It says exactly what it says!
Robbieee - The price I made for the plate is worth 3 times more now that its on the car. The car was £24,000. CASH. What makes you suggest I have money worries?? The issue was not affordability but availability!!
anthony - If you witnessed me doing a 'Hit-and-run' and your statement read "It was a Red 07 Civic and there was a Z in the last three digits" or if you said "It was a Red Civic and the plate said Civic but spelt wrong" - which one would be most likely to be traced - Answers on a postcard please!!!
alanwalne - Why do you assume I took the badge off? About the cost and value issue - you can have same answer as I gave Robbieeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!! Build a bridge and get over it!

Anyway you've all had your bitch I've had mine and Many Thanks to those who support me.
It was nice talking.

No offence meant to anyone after all were all Civic owners.

My comment about "weird this was bought by a Civic owner" was in fact ironic!
I think everyone else in the thread got this...
And I'm sorry - but as the thread brought up - having a plate in any font other than the standard is in fact illegal and you can get fined for this if a policeman is having a bad day!Number Plates and Private Plates.
