someone i know at work has just received a 1000 fine for defacing his number plate. The police did a 2 week hit on all people with dodgy number plates.
I say top marks to the Police on that. The illegal spacing and changing of letters and numbers on registration plates has got totally out of control.
Let's have a nationwide blitz on the practice,,,,,,,,rant over!!!!!

Reg's like this really peev me off!! If you cant afford the proper one, just dont bother!!

I'm confused by this...

The reg is 'C11VYK' - it is not misrepresented! It is correct, although there is very little space between the numbers and the letters (there should be 38mm between the groups). But it would be a very harsh ticket issuer who would issue a ticket for this.

Confused??
The letter spacing is wrong and the fonts are illegal too!!
Hope this has cleared up the confusion:
Here is the law:

As of January 2003, changes to the Law mean that all reflective acrylic number plates must conform to specific styles and dimensions, with criteria regulating decoration and extra information.
The following dimensions and regulations must be observed:
Plate and Font Dimensions
Standard Oblong plate524mm x 112mm
Standard Square rear plate285mm x 203mm
Large Front plate524mm x 112mm
Large Rear plate533mm x 152mm
Fonts must be displayed use the Charles Wright font and are available in standard or 3D.
Charles Wright font (per letter)50mm x 78mm
Small letter spacing distance11mm
Large letter spacing distance 34mm

The name, trade mark, or other means of identification of the manufacturer, and the name and postcode of the supplying outlet (the company who sells the number plates) must be displayed on the backing plate in the stipulated location.
Illegal plates will not be tolerated by the Police. You are not able to alter or misrepresent the letters of numbers, misplace them or change the font.

The following action could be taken against you in you do not adhere to the rules:
  • A fine of up to £1000
  • The registration number will be withdrawn from use
  • The vehicle will fail its MOT.
Borders are optional and can be up to 6mm wide.
Regional and country flags (including the Euro-symbol) are optional on plates and must be on the extreme left of the display.

Totally agree that its "illegal", however everyone is always going on about how PC this country has become.
Give the guy a break , the plate can be easily read (by us, police and gatsos) and hes not misrepresenting any letters or numbers.
Unlike some people who will put unnecessary screws to make a C look like an O or tilt a 2 to somehow make it look like a R ?

The reason they are clamping down on this is the increasing use of ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras.

They are geared up to read a number plate every second, and the incorrect spacing would cause problems. With ANPR cameras popping up on petrol forecourts to catch drive-off's, variable speed limit cameras and even the good old congestion zone cameras in the city, you know they are gonna clamp down!

Why do people de badge a car and buy a number plate for hundreds that nearly says the car name?????

It must be more cost effective just to leave the badge on!!!

#27 ·
Fair comment about the ANPR but i still think with the technology we have these days and with a plate like the one we are talking about, it would easily recognise it. oh well im sure we've all broken some rules now and then.

Now as some of you seem to know alot about private plates :p just say i buy a plate that is:

' N3 EXM ' is it "legal" to put it on my plate as ' N 3 E X M ' with the same spacing between each character, just asking so don't shoot please :p.

Well I'm about to buy "S29 AWS" - and get a plate printed as "S 29 AWS", but this will be legal size and legal standard lettering - If the police want to try and fine me £1,000 for putting the space in - I will honestly tell them to grow up there and then!

I think that's acceptable - they might frown upon it though... At the end of the day - you can read it still - maybe even clearer as it has the spaces! lol

I think the illegal actions are like these examples:
-Any font other than the standard and standard 3D version
-Turning characters round
-Making characters smaller
-Using the screw covers to join up characters and make other letters/numbers

Here is my private plate (I aksed for it to be totally LEGAL), it's on my old car, my Civ has a different plate, this will be going on my Escort Van ;):

I HATE numberplates that are misrepresented, by italicising, bolding, colouring etc. etc. etc., because if someone gets hurt and they drive off, you can't write down the plate, what happens then! If you've got a decent numberplate, then why do you need to alter it illegally? It still says what you want, so what does it matter??

Tom

BTW, beore anyone gets on my case, the image was on my old phone so everything looks a bit out ;-) Not bad for 250 quid though :)

How do things stand if someone has a short personalised registration and they have shortened the actual plate?
I see so many Porsche Cayennes driving around with 3 character registrations and the number plate halved in size to suit, is this still legal if all the lettering dimensions are correct?

#36 ·
As far as I understand the law, YES, it is illegal, as it does not conform to any stadard sizing (there are three current legal styles I believe, that for rovers/jags, that for short squat plates and that of normal sized plates, anything else I believe is illegal).

Tom

Much of this 'tailored numbers' twaddle would be kicked into touch, if the people maufacturering/making up the plates were prosecuted as well as the people displaying them on their vehicles.

Anthony.

(yes, I am a grumpy old man.)

I'm Gonna enjoy this.........

I'm the Owner of CIIVYK and am replying on behalf of my wife who drives the car more than I do.
robbo51 - Lets see who places the note first me or you LOL. I know you park in the school carkpark. I figure that you took the pic on 'Review day.' Weren't you observant enough to notice the civinfo sticker on my back screen? Why do you suggest that they give 'the guy a break' when it was you who started quoting the law!!!
sambuca2907 - Do you think I'd be stupid enough to drive a Ford Escort with this reg number - I think not. Why is this weird?? Could you explain how I bought the plate in order to deface it - It says exactly what it says!
Robbieee - The price I made for the plate is worth 3 times more now that its on the car. The car was £24,000. CASH. What makes you suggest I have money worries?? The issue was not affordability but availability!!
anthony - If you witnessed me doing a 'Hit-and-run' and your statement read "It was a Red 07 Civic and there was a Z in the last three digits" or if you said "It was a Red Civic and the plate said Civic but spelt wrong" - which one would be most likely to be traced - Answers on a postcard please!!!
alanwalne - Why do you assume I took the badge off? About the cost and value issue - you can have same answer as I gave Robbieeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!! Build a bridge and get over it!

Anyway you've all had your bitch I've had mine and Many Thanks to those who support me.
It was nice talking.

No offence meant to anyone after all were all Civic owners.

My comment about "weird this was bought by a Civic owner" was in fact ironic!
I think everyone else in the thread got this...
And I'm sorry - but as the thread brought up - having a plate in any font other than the standard is in fact illegal and you can get fined for this if a policeman is having a bad day!Number Plates and Private Plates.

Hi,

It was Sambuca, Type S Bournemouth, me and several others who mentioned the plate was illegal, and it was only a matter of fact point, that you run the risk of a 1000 pound fine (possibly more if you argue with them), 3-5 points on your licence, possible detainment under the ATA if you drive near a major city (anti-terrorism act, this is because your plate would be unreadable by ANPR cameras), as well as your insurance company failing to cover you if you are involved in an RTI, because your numberplate is illegal (and believe me they are this petty).

We weren't being horrible, just discussing a point (that the police of late have been clamping down HARD on people with dodgy plates :-( ).

Have a wander round the site, you'll find loads of stuff you never knew (like all those niggles and noises, they're not in your head, most of us have them), your car looks top, just change the plate before you get a tug from the law.

ATB,
Tom :)
