LCD with artifacts when sunlight is strong

I have a question regarding the touch screen that I don't know if it will be normal or not, but I don't believe it is... If it is, it's pretty bad.

Car is an 2017 Tourer but I think this system is common to more models.

At the time I took the test drive before I bought it, I had noticed something but as the weather was kind of cloudy it seemed to be something light and I even thought it was some setting.

I bought the car and I believe more and more that it is not normal. With the sun shining hitting on the screen, you can see a lot of artifacts. Even today I was using the navigation system and couldn't even almost nothing when the sun was hitting it. The issue isn't the lack of brighness, but because all I could see were these artifacts. And the sun wasn't even strong. At night the problem is not so apparent but during sunny days it becomes almost unusable.

I leave here some photos that I took tonight when the issue isn't as much aparent but I took the photos with flash and what I'm talking about are those vertical and horizontal lines that you can see. You can practically only see this on a sunny day, and I don't believe it's normal... I'm still going to take some pictures with the sun hitting, but these give you an idea.

Can someone with an identical system confirm me if they have this "problem"?

yes the 1.5 Jazz we bought this week shows exactly the same.
I guess it is the wiring that activates the LCD and the angle of the screen

Thanks for your reply. I'm more rested now since it's seems normal and there is no issue with the unit.

However, it's a shame it's almost unreadable under direct sunlight in some specific angles. Sometimes all I can see are those wirings.

I'm thinking to buy an anti-glare film to see if it helps anything.

Aah hadn't thought of that
I've also read about some visors that can prevent some glare but I didn't looked at it yet.

Took a picture right now, during the day, at shadow, even with the car turned off and it's very clear. I suppose with direct sunlight this part isn't affected (or it's even worsen) but the image fades and that's why is so evident and "overlaps" the image which makes things even worse. One thing is to have a glare in the image, other is to have a glare and this "overlaped".

I don't get if this is really "normal" how they could release a product like this.

yep, its an aging touch screen technology, it uses captive touch to register through those veins, completes the electrical circuit with human touch.

a lot of industrial HMIs use that kind of tech, pretty reliable, just not prettiest in direct sunlight.

but come to think of it, its never stopped me reading the screen, do you have the autolight sensor on the unit disabled? The sun n moon logo button iirc, make sure its auto, it then uses a light sensor to adjust screen brightness. also daytime make sure dash leds are at full im pretty sure that also adjusts head unit, id need to check when i get mine back, i always thought a small top hood could work sitting say 5mm around 3 of the edges would work, cant recall last time i actually flipped unit to put in a cd, probs when i bought it lol
Thanks for the explanation.

On one hand I'm glad the unit doesn't have any issue. On the other hand, it's a shame it's doesn't have a more recent tech but the reliabilty is the most important, so I guess at the time, Honda took the correct decision.

About the autolight sensor, day/night time I have no idea of what was selected at the time because I didn't know about that feature but later I noticed it and maybe you are right and maybe it was in night mode or something. It has been cloudy these days but I will try day/auto mode when the sun cames back again to check. I think mine has 3 modes. Day, night and a 3rd one. That should be the auto?

yip 3rd one is auto :) tbh theunit is ok decent enough, just a shame screen mirroring plainly doesnt work on anything past android 4 handsets.....honda dropped support so quickly, the 10th gen infotainment is slightly better.....2023s looks super neat on the typer
Today I was testing it and unfortunately seems mine doesn't have auto mode but instead Day, Night and Off. Still in the next sunny day I will double check if it has day mode enabled.

Yes, you are right, it's a shame Honda didn't update the unit to a more recent Android version. I wish I could use Screen Mirroring or Android Auto.

How do you stream Google Maps by Bluetooth? Are you using Makis XDA APP? I had a quick look on it but there were so many pages I had no time to read them all and I'm not sure if it works fine and the install is easy on 9G.

nah sorry, let me clarify, i use my phone to stream from soundcloud but run googlemaps on the handset, in center bin, i just use the voice nav as well as my garmin app on my head unit (GT spec 16 plates came with garmin satnav app and 5 years of maps :) googlemaps will add to the stream from soundcloud as its connected via bluetooth.
I got it :)

Today was a very sunshine day and I went to the beach... When I parked, took this photo with direct sun reflecting on the screen. I check the settings and it was on day mode and brightness was at max. I couldn't see anything on the screen. Only the circuits. If this isn't an issue during night or day when the sun isn't directly reflecting, it's an huge issue when reflecting... I need to solve this. Maybe trying an anti-glare protector, a visor or something.

Ive seen screen protectors for them on eBay, not sure if it will cut down glare tho, glass is more reflective than the LCD panel.

Well, today I almost 100% solved the glare issue with a cardboard (0.40€) and a little of creativity. May not be the best looking thing but it's not bad at all and it solved the issue. And it's very easy to take if off when I want.

About the "artefacts" next week I will visit a dealer only to know what they say.

heya mate, not saying this would solve it but technically it may help make it less glare affect and hide the overlay a touch, im going to give it a try.

Hey.

When you try it, please leave a feedback to see if it helps.

Meanwhile I also found this one.

It seems they have two versions, the anti-glare and the dayvue. I contact them because I only found Civic US versions and the screen doesn't seems to be the same. They told me they will contact me but never did.
