Hi!

I have a 2008 Civic Sport and I absolutely love it. However, I feel that this car is maybe not the right one for what I use it for.

The problem is that I tend to drive a lot form Hungary to Germany, and that involves driving at 4000 rpm or more for hours and hours (3 or more).

My question is, is this something the engine can tolerate in the long run?
Second question, is it possible to modify the gearbox somehow, so it revs less in 6th gear?

I feel very bad that it is almost at 4000 rpm while driving at 150km/h (93 mph). It is also bad for fuel consumption.

Im no expert but 4000 isn't high, I'm sure if you really wanted to go down the route of modified gear box you could ie change last gear ratio but I wouldnt think that's needed.

4000 isn't high. I wouldn't even worry at 5000. 6000 or higher for long periods would probably cause extra wear.

I would also hazard a guess that the engine could really do more than 6,800 RPM.

It's real redline may be 7000 or even 7250 but makers often limit there engines topspeed for extra life.

But if you want to get where ever it is without hearing the engine scream, get into the left lane and drop your speed a bit, your economy will be better too.

It wont.

Not enough junk in the trunk type thing.

Will hit about 5,500rpm in 6th, maybe higher if it was slightly downhill or you were drafting 20 feet from a car infront.

And I doubt there is little point upping the limiter more as peak power has been and gone

+1 ...4000rpm is no where near redline.
Its more of a cruising rpm for the engine.

I don't think a 1.8 will hit the limiter in top gear
It won't!

If that rpm was bad for the engine then mine would be kettled after 3 years of ownership given my motorway mileage.

As you have the R18 engine your not in VTEC at that rpm....which will help immensely ;) :worms:

4k rpm in a type R is just 80mph in 6th. As everyone says - dont worry about it , the 1.8 will sit there all day with no problems. If you stop for a break, you might want to reduce speed down to 60 or so for a couple of miles beforehand rather than screaming into the services and just shutting the engine off.

Thank you for the answers, everyone! This means I can stop worrying about it, then.

Reducing the speed is also an option of course.
