Hi guys and girls,

This place takes me back to the old days on the Alfaowner Forum. I'm looking for a daily car for work and a FN2 Civic Type-R seems to tick all the boxes. My last car was a sporty diesel Alfa 156 with some modifications, but I need something reliable given my new job, so Alfa is out of the window. I'd like to get something on the road for under 5k ideally and I'm in the Stoke/Cheshire area near to Crewe. Any buying advice or cherished cars for sale? Is there a specialist nearby who might help me check a car over? Unfortunately Google thinks not :(

They are cracking cars but you really need to drive one to make sure that's it's for you.
It sounds crazy but if your doing lots of motor way miles then maybe it's not for you.
They are reliable enough but I wouldn't daily one again.
They are very affordable, get lots for 5k.
They can be pretty thirsty late 20's / 30 mpg is about what I got.
How many miles a year are you doing?

Ran an 07 model for 4.5 years.
First the bad points, I’m sure you’ve read about it but check 3rd gear on early cars plus a few other issues.
Mine were all sorted and it ran faultlessly after that.
Now the good, that engine. It is a true great and that noise when you red line it, well if you don’t buy it after that I’ll be surprised.

I did and still do love the styling and interior.
For me the biggest down side was the ride, and it was because of that, that I sold it.

A few months ago my son bought a 10 plate and boy did that revive the memories.
He loves it.
So if you want a no compromise performance hatch, then get one and keep it on a healthy diet of red line when ever possible.

£5k will get you a decent enough one.

Just use your previous knowledge of living with an Alfa :sinking: to look for the usual issues of buying used.
if it looks well cared for and has plenty of documents to support service etc then you should be fine.

Don't expect much above 30 mpg in normal running but you could get high 30s on a long motorway run on cruise.

ownership costs are not too painful, £315 road tax is the worst bit. Tyres are around £90 each for decent rubber, discs & pads average, servicing no worse than any other 2.0l car.

the ride is hard but tolerable, the price you pay for the handling.

There is a decent looking car for 5k on the "other" site, Silver 2010 model with lsd and 79k on the clock. Based in Scunny.

Based on looking for one for my son a few months ago, that seems a good price.
But we did look at several that were described as good, but were far from it in the flesh. Worth a look and let us know what you think after a test drive.

If it's any help I got mine on 30k miles and its now on 130k and the only major issue I had that left me stranded was blowing up a driveshaft. Hot day sticky tyres and driving quite hard. Other than that it has never let me down, still on the OEM clutch. If serviced frequently and looked after it will serve you well. I get about 28mpg around town and 37mpg on motorways.

as noted above the ride can be a little firm sometimes, depending on mood this can be entertaining or a little annoying. I have spent the past 6 months trying to find my replacement and always end up keeping the FN2, so will either modify it a little more or get and FK2 still undecided!
