Hi guys,

So I am doing a LOT of miles at the moment and normally end up changing my heat a lot while doing long journeys, hot with window open (to keep me awake) to normal like 21, to cold...

I was coming back from work (150 miles) and I left the AC @ 21 degrees, about 70miles in, I got a funny smell and immediately the whole car steamed up, windows went up like I had a kettle on!

I was doing about 70 on the motorway when this happened and it was a bit of a panic to demist...

Wondering what could cause this and what is the solution as I personally have NO idea???

Iv noticed that if i dont have my heater on the windscreen setting then it steams up unless i have my windows open

I was told that it could be due to any moisture thats in the car, i thought to start with it was because i fully shampood the interior but that was last summer and its not changed

I have noticed that if i used autoglym glass polish inside they steam up really bad but if i used normal cheap glass spray then they are fine. Try cleaning all the interior windows with that, it helped improve mine

I found that it was wet floor mats...put your heater on full for 10-15 mins just on feet settings... its better now...

Especially as I am pulling the dash out now and its cold outside!!!

May be worth getting the AC recharged or checked otherwise it will be moisture in the car.

Funny smell and sudden mising after 70miles dont sound good.
Personal ideas.
1. Knackered auxhiliary belt.
2. Knackered compressor (or line fracture).
3. Blown fuse or sensor...although to what I cant think off hand.
4. Plugged/blocked fresh air vent or filter.

Checked the belts and all is good, air con is going ice cold when I ask it too so can't think what sensor it might be...
Could well be compressor or line fracture in the system...

What I am hoping for is plugged/blocked air vent/filter... would this be pollen filter? As I am due a major service when this should be changed...
Where can I find this filter?

Michael I tried heating the car up to try and dry out but I can't find any dampness...

Might try and find an Air con place to take a look at it, problem is I am in a new area for work and don't know anywhere.... Hmm I am driving back to work again tonight another 150miles so might try and narrow it down a bit then!

It would be the pollen filter yes but I havent neded to change on eon mine.

If it goes stone cold AC when the enignes hot.
I would say the compressor lines and fluid are all ok.
So maybe a cabin temp sensor, fuse or a blockage then.

Engine temps are ok ?

Engine temp is perfect (indicated) obviously I don't know genuinely how hot it is but sits well below the halfway mark on the gauge regardless of driving be it motorway or city centre traffic.

Will check for blockages and look at filters as my first port of call as this will be easiest, been to check all fuses and all ok.

Will also try leaving the car running outside with the heaters on max pointed at the footwells and see if it really was just dampness...

Could be the heater matrix ,think it might be item 12 in relics link,

I had one of these leak on a Mitsubishi FTO and it was like sitting inside a kettle, windows steamed up instantly ,
Also had a funny smell which was the coolant from the engine leaking onto the carpet and vaporising with the steam.
It was a dash out job to replace,

You checked you coolant levels lately , has it gone down ,
Fingers crossed its not this cos it prob a bitch to do

Go to eurocar parts and get a new pollen filter, ask for the carbon activated one and pay an extra couple of quid, with out AC its about the only thing it could be

Coolant is fine - checked weekly.
How would I check heater matrix???

First job is Pollen Filter if thats damp/blocked by the sounds of it that could cause this, it didnt happen on my journey last night though with the AC set at 19 not 21... confused!!! Haha

Hi judderman,

If it's any help, father had similar to this on a Seat Ibiza and it was a blocked drain so the condensate was not draining away and backing up into the system. Might be worth running with air con on and then looking under car when you've parked up to look for usual signs/puddles under car.

Outside temps yesterday were much colder than last week, only 2 degrees here all day !! So air con not actually doing much work IMHO
