so i topped up my oil because it seemed a bit low, all was well or so i thought..

i drove 15 miles upto the mother in laws, started walking up the road to the house and noticed shiny black marks on the road.. "*** is that?"
checked under the car only to find a puddle of oil!

"oh god! ive over filled it..."
i opened the bonnet and the oil was everywhere!

I FORGOT TO PUT THE OIL CAP BACK ON!

so i started cleaning up under the bonnet, oil has went onto the belts and stuff but im sure it will be alright..

just gotta top up in the mornin..

i thought i smelt oil!!

How messy is the engine bay? There a lot of oil in in there?
If you are gonna drive, do not open the engine bay once you stop or else it might flare up because of the sudden intake of air.
I would pressure wash it of go get an engine bay clean from a car washing place if its really bad.

ive never thought pressure washing was a good idea becaise of the electrics..

i have a lil steamer..

ive managed to wipe most off the bonnet cover and engine cover etc and the majority of it has dripped off.

Can you see any on the pipes and manifolds, turbo (if you have one). These are the hot spots where it will be the most likley to catch.
You say its dripped off but it'll leave a trail/residue. This is thin and will ignite a lot easier.

If you avoid the electrics under the bonnet you should be ok on the pressure wash, Don't know much about steamersto be honest. Just do the pipes if there bad. If its not really bad, like a few spots it may just burn off on a decent run and be ok.

Got any pics?

Don't steam clean it mate, just get a bottle of engine degreaser, spray it liberally and use a bucket of water, brush and plenty of elbow grease.

Also ensure that you have the correct amount of oill in the engine too.

What Fahad said. Steam Cleaning/Pressure washing can get water where it's not wanted

well guys i went out with towels and cloth etc and done what i could. it dont look like its on the manifold or anything, but i do notice bits of smoke on the light beam when sitting stationary. so i drove 3 miles and the engine light came on with the coil symbol flashing, what could that be? i checked the oil level and it looks full since i topped it up..
all the power seems to be their although i now have a fire canister in the car just encase

Yeh but it went off after 20 mins. I done the fault code thing but it said dtc no. So I dunno... I've heard its a common firmware issue. But mine is remapped.. I think its to much of a coincidence that the lights have come on since I done this.. any thoughts mate?

Lol, that smell will stay a few days untill it fully burns off i guess.
As for the code, re-set the ecu by taking the negative cable off the battery for 15-25 mins if it comes back and stays on much longer. Thats as far as my expertise on fault codes go. Maybe a search of the forum will revieal more.
Found this in a thread also ''cleared it by switching ignition on and off 3 times (as recomended in the manual)''
Never heard of this before but worth a try i guess.
