Hi. I'm looking at moving away from my current car which is a 2015 Vauxhall Corsa 1.4T Sri . I was considering having a 2017 Vauxhall Astra 1.6cdti Sri but that model seems to have a lot of quality issues at moment.

So I've come across a couple of 66 plate 1.6 iDTEC sports one in white and other in red. Mileage range is 12500 & 21000.

So next question is. Are there any issues to be aware of ?? also can you purchase a spare wheel for one ??

I recently bought a 16 plate i-dtec, albeit with a lot more miles (47k). Still tight as a drum at that mileage so lower mileage should be fine.

Only real issue (and it's not so much an issue more normal for the car) is rear brake wear seems to be quicker than fronts. So just take for a test drive and check over and get any remedial work done as part of the deal.

Usual things like service history check. Also ask if either of the cars were purchased with a 5 year service plan ( quite common) as it will transfer to your ownership which is quite handy.

Other than that a great car with very good mpg.

And yes you can get a spare wheel for it, there is space beneath the false boot for it.

all cars have issues
but coming from Vauxhall's im sure you would be impressed by the honda
ive recently switched to 2015 civic 1.6 sport the car is not as economical as I expected but still ok and its not as powerfull as id like
but I came from the 2.2 8g civic so power was always going to be a bit of a let down
go take the car out for a decent test drive
space savers are available from honda think there is a kit complete with jack
but plenty around second hand

Check the day time running lights work not a known/common fault but an expensive one if they need replacing. The standard H7 halogen bulbs don’t offer brilliant visibility. I fitted a HID kit with H7R reflectors now some may disagree but nobody’s flashed at me yet & passed & MOT so no issues.

DPF filter if it’s had low mileage you could see it light up on the dash anytime soon as with all modern diesels really.

MPG is debtable motorway mileage you should easily achieve 60MPG & strictly on regular local short cold runs have seen it drop to 42MPG.

Engine noise mine is ridiculously loud at idle compared to other Morden diesels I do find it quite embarrassing & others have also noticed too but that’s where the stop start function comes in. That’s my biggest gripe.

Performance local routes not exactly quick but on motorway it has plenty of ontop performance probably linked in with power to weight ratio or in gear acceleration the torque makes it effortless.

Sports alloys generally come in black check for kerb damage etc.

Bodywork scratches or stonechips.

To be fair there isn’t a fault as such to report on as theyr pretty much bullet proof more niggles than anything else.

+ theyr not usually in the hands of your typical wanabe gangsters who say want to drive an Audeh/BM/VDUB even if it’s the most underpowered lowest spec model. As long as it’s got the badge, anyway going off topic so you should find one easily that’s in good hands in a decent spec.

Thanks to all for there advice. Think I'm going have a look at a red Nov 2016 i-dtec sport. Its done 11000 and looks the part from the photos the dealer have sent me. I'll update you all later in the week once I've seen it and drove it. Finger's crossed it's all good ?

Hi Lawley76,

Adding to stomper's post - the rear brakes wear very quickly, had my MOT in August (all brakes were good), now I have a hefty bill to pay for new discs and pads in the read - fronts 80% worn. There's no audible warning from the rear brakes which is ridiculous on a new car like this. If you're going for this car, make sure the rear brakes are sound. One way to tell is sponginess in the brake pedal as I had - thought it to be quite normal and nothing to worry about - especially that the car was braking just fine.

Not much else in terms of other issues - keep it serviced and it should be fine :)

Thanks to all above for the info. Tonight I've paid for the car to be taken off sale subject to test driving it Friday afternoon. I've been emailed the condition report and the brakes are noted to be 70% worn at the front & 80% worn at the rear. To be totally honest i'll get my mate who own's a garage to check that out just to be sure.

One last question the car has 10 months factory warranty on it. Is there breakdown cover included in that ?? Whats your opinion on extended warranty ??

Out of interest how did you find the engine sound at idle?


I’m with you on the idle sound noise CIVICICDTI. The 1.6 does indeed sound like a tractor in comparison to the old 2.2 cdti and even more than my 2.2 MAZDA skyactive engine.

As a minimum you should get 1 year warranty and breakdown (assuming you are buying from a Honda dealer?)

I would definitely look into extended warranty, when I got mine in December I got an additional 3 years for £600 as a special deal when bought with the car (normally £900 I think).

That way you have 4 years warranty and peace of mind.

They do a full inspection of the car and rectify anything flagged on that before you take it.

I would insist on them replacing your brakes as part of the sale price, why should you foot the bill?

I got mine in December and it was going to be 3 years old in march so I got them to MOT it as well as part of the sale so I got 1 years MOT.

Test drove the new motor today. Absolutely love it. Can't wait to give it a good blast next Friday when I pick it up. Cheers to everyone for there advice. Can anyone send me a link to upgrade the interior lighting. Need the white led upgrade if there's such a thing. Also number plate bulb upgrade also. Cheers

Interior lights are all T10 / W5W bulbs - That's
Left map light
Right map light
Dome light
Boot light
Number plate light L
Number plate light R

So 6 T10 bulbs in total.

You can fit any LED in the dome, boot and numberplate lights, however, the squareish LEDs don't fit in the map lights - Too tall to allow the button pressing.

I'd strongly reccomend OSRAM T10 bulbs; They are expensive, but they are the only LEDs I've used that have lasted for more than a few months without becoming a flickery mess:- That said, I currently have a cheap blue LED in the dome light for style points, and short T10 LEDs in the map lights.

I haven't changed the mirror lights; They're already bright enough, and the warm glow makes it easier to do my makeup whilst driving. (Har har)

Have never understood why folks want to make their rear number plate brighter?

Re the interior bulbs, how easy is it to get the plastic lens off to get at the bulbs?
