I was all set to pick up an 08 diesel ex with 42k on the clock from a car supermarket tomorrow for what i hoped was £8600 when I was told of an 06 petrol ex with 21k on the clock from a Honda dealer. I also heard on the radio that diesel was going up even further, refinery issues that won't effect petrol nearly as much. On the face of it which is the better buy?

I have to buy tomorrow as I have just sold my car

I wouldn't pay much attention to the news. I swore I'd never buy a petrol car again then got the 1.8 civic! :)

I'm happy with it and I can drive it economically and have fun at the same time. On the other hand the diesel has stacks of potential for power. Compare the two models, spec age, condition etc and go whichever is best. I'm no more skint now than I was with my Golf TDI

^Indeed.^
Thoughts... An 08 derv with 42k on the odo means it's travelled far enough each day for the engine to fully warm up. In other words "it's only just been run in" <-- Seriously !

An 06 petrol with just 21k on the odo means it's a shopping trolley. It has only ever done short journeys.

That really knackers an engine quicker than a thrash-head who at least warms their car up first.

(high) Mileage really means little in this day an age.

i bought a 06 diesel a couple of months ago with 58k on the clock. It runs as if brand new. Go for the diesel would be my suggestion.

I enjoy the sound of my petrol. But when I had my diesel and it was written off a year later, I was actually able to sell for more than I'd paid for it (£200 more). People are buying diesels, not petrols. Petrol car prices are dropping a lot quicker than the diesel. If you are paying slightly more for diesel, you'll easily make that back and more on economy and resale.

Not to mention their engines are built to sustain a lot more than a petrol etc.

Just remember to let your car idle for 10-20 seconds before turning the engine off.

Id go Derv mate! Just make sure you get a decent warranty and thoroughly check the clutch! Bought an 07 ex with 47k on the clock in October and the clutch packed in within a month. Luckily it was under warranty!!

I would def go for the 08 reg 42k diesel over an 06 21k petrol, however i would shop around a bit on autotrader as £8,600 is a lot for an 06 reg, i only paid £6,995 for my 57 type s gt over 12 months ago!

Thanks for your feedback.

By the time I left this morning, before all your comments, to go and make my choice. I had decided on the petrol. But whilst stuck in a big jam on the A3 decided to phone ahead and check that the car was still available...............it wasn't ( it was up for 8k btw) so I headed in the opposite direction and am now the proud owner of a 08 Diesel that I was told was silver but on inspection has a slight gold sheen. Couple of scratches and stuff but seems fine. Last service at 35k. Paid 8499 ( they had it in the sale) but here is the best bit. I got £1200 for my jazz SE. It needed the windscreen fixed (chip in the black trim) new brakes all round AND the bearings were shot I wasn't even sure if I was going to get there as it had got so loud. They never drove it just made sure the engine turned :) I was delighted,my local garage had said about £500-£700 tops. So all in all a very happy chappy.
But I must learn to slow down and stop grinning. I can't believe the pull from just about any ware :)
