Here's the dilemma.

Pull in to a service station to fill up. Open door. Ding Ding Ding (left key in the ignition). Pull the key, and the lever for the filler flap. Fill up. Walk round to get wallet from jacket pocket, remove fuel card... wait for it... need the mileage for the fuel card company.... Damn. Forgot...

Put key in the ignition, turn to position II to get the display to come on... damn! shows driver's door open. Get in, close drivers door... watch as station staff think you're about to drive off without paying... wait for display to recover and show you the mileage... remove key... get out... lock and pay...

On my previous car (VW) you simply pressed the trip reset button briefly and that brought up the mileage for a few seconds without the key.

Can't see anything in the Civic owner's manual - any clues how I can get the mileage without having to use the key?

No.... really? That simple?

Must have tried every other combination of holding down two/three buttons at once - even tried the voice control and asked the question! Actually that last bit was a lie... but you never know...

Thanks for the super-speedy response.

hold on - youre saying without the key... well this works when you put the key in and hit the button to "cancel" the door warning..

had this problem when i wanted to check the mileage when taking car to dealers

no with the key is fine. I just didn't want to have to get back in, close the door and put ignition on just to get the numbers up.

Didn't realise 'i' cancelled the door warning. Thanks for the tip.

I just turn the key all the way to the point that which you would push the button. If you only turn the key one notch you need to hit the i to see the mileage. Or just do like I do, keep forgetting to give them the mileage, or have a guess. I was only 300 miles out with my last guess!!!

Tried it this morning - you still need the key in and on position II for the i button to do anything. You still get the 'door open' warning this way though, so pushing the 'i' solves this. The only way not to have to push the button is with the door closed... see my first post for the reasoning behind this!

Guess I could learn to remember before I turn off the ignition when pulling in to the station...

But how do you learn to remember? ;-)

But to get to the fuel cap lever I've already unbuckled my seat belt which comes after I've switched off the ignition...

It's OK - I'll learn!

Hehe...

Or just do as I said earlier, forget. Its like the moan I have about having to press the TA button twice to skip the Traffic Announcements, once to turn it off the other back on again, you could do it with only one press in the Accord loaner I had, the solution deal with pushing it twice.;) I am sure we will all come to terms with these little quirks.
