Hi,
I need you help with fixing of following issue with engine oil consumption:
First time the yellow low level oil icon warning appeared at 60000km.
Local Honda’s garage checked the engine and didn’t find out any problem.

However, the engine is consuming oil and the yellow warning is on.
Is it a normal situation?
Is there a way to fix it?

Thanks,
Mark

-It is not a big deal to check oil level every week.

However, I’m trying to understand why a relative new car consumes oil:
I’m expecting that the oil level will be high enough between two sequential services and oil refilling won’t be necessary…

(According to my local Honda representative requirement, the millage between two services is 15000km)

The 15000km service interval looks like a combination of both normal and severe use conditions (normal being 20000km, severe being 10000km). I Have a feeling that between min and max on the dipstick is around 1 litre. If you were adding this over 12000km i would say that wasn't high consumption. I would think that Honda's max oil consumption figures would be greatly higher than this. Personally i like to keep mine around the max mark anyhow, so always top it up when it drops below it.

As far as what is causing oil usage in a young car i don't think it will be a problem with anything. Honda aren't gonna manufacture and fit poor quality valve stem seals or piston rings. It could be down to how the engine has been run in from new. If the engine has been run in too kindly the rings may have not worn into the bores well enough, this causes less sealing and then a little more oil will pass the rings. I'm not sure if Honda use a different oil in the civic until the first service to help the engine wear in better, but they have made this mistake in the past with motorbike engines. They put in a high qaulity oil straight from the off and the bores didn't wear in well enough, some of those engines were using 1 litre per 1000miles!!!

Mine uses a litre every few thousand miles and VTEC definately gets used. I've always that it was normal for type R's to get through some oil?

If you're not pouring blue smoke out of the exhaust when driving it, it's not burning excessive amounts of oil ;)

As above. If it goes, sounds and feels how it should I wouldn't worry. As mentioned above, the Honda manual mentions anything up to 1litre per 1000 miles is within range though you would have to push the car pretty darn hard to get that much oil consumption.
