Just went back to edit my post in the Gallery section, but received a message telling me that I cannot edit the post due to it being more than 24 hours old.

I think this seems a bit of an odd limit.

In my case, I would like to keep the main thread updated with a sort of index with links to other posts in the thread so that if/when the thread is a few pages long, people do not have to look through every page to find what they are perhaps looking for.

Is there anything that can be done about this?

I think especially in the Gallery, Project and Tutorial sections this limit should be removed.

If I need to update a post I just "Report" the post to a moderator and someone usually gets back to me quite quickly, they are very helpful :)

I think I will end up doing this at some point. I just don't want to take up their time with silly minor edits.

We've seen posts amended and they really did throw the following replies into confusion.

As said above, just report it and we can make sure the thread is left syncronised

The main reason I edit posts is to correct grammar and spelling. I re-read a post of mine sometimes a day or two after posting and literally cringe with embarrassment. Where I can, I will edit. Where this is not possible I leave it but if there is a significant amendment or additional information to add, then if possible I add it at the bottom after an indication that it is an edit. If I can't do that either I will just answer my own post with the amendment or explanation.
