Hello fellas - not posted in a while, but after some advice/opinions on a strange noise that my type r has developed whilst in the vtec window. It's hard to describe but it sounds like the sort of noise you get when covering up the nozzle of a vacuum - like a super charger or air rushing in through a cracked window. If I just drop out of the window it stops but blip it back into vtec it starts again.

I'm going back to the professors at TDI south for them to investigate further. But in the mean time I'm hoping you guys n girls can shed some light on the problem.

Car is not standard - Mods mugen quick shift, suspension, toda exhaust, braided lines, flashpro, HKS panel filter. Just in case these mods could be causing the noise??

If i remember correctly mine did that but i assumed it was the RSK just sucking air in harder as im pressing the throttle harder

Hello mate - If I had to place the noise it sounds like its coming from the passenger side of the car engine bay area when I'm driving. I wasn't aware Toda had any issues, wonder if I should give them a call? Where did you read about the problems? Links would be great:)

Hi buddy.

Passenger side of engine bay? thats not exhaust then.

The intake is in that area, you checked for any leaks or split pipes on the intake?

Alternatively it could just be the box whining, some do it more than others. I doubt its thats thoe as it would do it out of vtec also.

Toda catback issues were slightly common in early days, I think marcin aka mw1978 had a few issues and got a new silencer. Also I think that gryffin chap in London with the SC had it replaced also.

Its difficult to say without hearing it. It will just be speculation on here. Get Dennis on it, he will find the issue.

I have a whining, whistling type noise coming from somewhere too, but much lower down the rev range, I was thinking it maybe a pulley, but can't be sure, Im hoping its not the gearbox whining, if its the gearbox, would it sound like it's in reverse?

I think there is a problem where the induction pipe joins the throttle body.
It can crack and split here...think it was ash that had the issue..maybe j_h if not.
Sounds like air seeping in where its not supposed to though.

Sorry for the delay - I will have a butchers tomorrow at the hose. Do they have a habit of failing? Defiantly think it's air getting in as well - not sure but the I suppose as the cams switch for vtec that it sucks more air in which is why the noise can't be heard at normal revs?

Cant see any splits in the hose:( did notice that the lower hose under the top hose entering the airbox did not have a hose clip not sure if this is normal or not. Cant believe no one else has experienced this noise:(

Hi Ash - Will be starting a build thread soon and will explain it better on there. But in a nut shell TDI South found that it was an internal aerodynamic issue with the oem airbox on a stock engine remapped with flashpro -

Remapped engine demanding an amount of air that the stock air box couldn't satisfy so is sucking more and generating a bit of a whistle in the resonator chamber. I have the mugen CAI on its way to me and am assured this will cure the problem.

The guys don't usually flashpro/remap stock ctr engines so either the customer never noticed the whistle or they already had a dedicated induction kit. Am told its nothing to worry about that's the main thing:)

Will be booking in soon to have the Mugen CAI fitted and just won a Toda Manifold from Dahools so will report back on findings:)

Ah ok, I had stock car remapped by TDI South for about 5 days, I never noticed the noise but like I said it was only 5 days.

look forward to the build thread, and congrats on the manifold, its one of my best mods.
